I've done that for my mother in law. After she killed the first two bears it just got too expensive.

True story, knew someone living in apt. bldg.

Had their package stolen.

A week later got a call from cops, they busted the nimrods after pulling them over for a traffic violation and seeing packages with lotsa different names on them piled in the back seat.

They were TOO LAZY to even discard the evidence.

Turns out they lived in the same building and that was grounds for immediate eviction.

I have never been charged for an item that was stolen. The store just resends another. Saks has great customer service.

With increasing package theft, what do you think this will do to the margins of the companies, or of individual merchants? Many will decide that it is no longer worth it, and simply stop selling or go out of business, if they are constantly having to send replacement items or issue refunds for stolen packages.

My neighborhood had its first package thief about a week ago (caught on a Ring doorbell). I’m tempted to put my dog’s waste in an Amazon box outside my door instead of the little “poo pot” I use after walks. Might save me the trouble of dumping the pot on trash days. Free collection service!

Not really. Near many Wal-Marts, strip malls sprang up and so the mom and pop stores opened up there. But Wal-Mart definitely hurt downtowns as did the enclosed malls.

Or change their model. At the moment the sender refuses to buy the additional time of the delivery force by forcing a signature at acceptance. They also don't want their customers to have to get out of their homes to go pick it up because if they are leaving anyway they might as well go to the brick and mortar store. The cost of replacing theft, be it from pirates or someone willing to lie about piracy to get a second delivery, is cheaper than the $4 per item.
