The question has a simple answer. Putin hates NATO. Trump dislikes NATO, but for different reasons.
Putin understood that invading Ukraine would galvanize the West and NATO countries, so he waited until the end of an anti-NATO Presidential administration to make a move. I'm sure he was hoping that Trump would win and actually pull the USA out of NATO.
and I don't think he made the calculus that it would galvanize them at all. I think he sees them all as anti-war cowards who would shut up and thank him next month for his energy supply.
