Then it really hasn't gone up much, from $8 to $9.

I picked up a $22 flank steak the other day for $9. I didn't have plans to use it this week but bought it to freeze and put into inventory.
The only thing you are saying is that, they paid ~$9 for that flank steak....if you paid ~$22 prior....well...

The $7.99 was already an inflated price from what I last paid for it...$5+

lots of money is spent in non essentials. This keeps the economy going. People will eventually figure out what these non essentials are, finding out HBO, highest speed internet and starbucks are not actually required to have to live. At that point the economy will grind to a halt. Now even after cutting all that people cant afford things like gas, food and a little entertainment then there is going to be a great deal of social upheaval.

I paid the $9, which is more or less the normal price. My point was that people will make decisions like that. Just like the auto companies trained us to wait for the rebates.

Meanwhile we have runaway inflation. 7.9% is what the media says but I personally see 20%.
More than that on food.

As BTO would say

Mid 70s and early 80s had worse inflation.
