First, everyone on the road needs to be automated (no more human drivers). The infrastructure also needs to be updated with "smart" tech. There will also need some sort of language that all AI cars can communicate with each other and also with every city/town traffic signals.
I remember Elon stating that Tesla was going to launch driverless Tesla Taxis in 2019. Never happened.
I don't know about all that; it just needs to be useful enough to be profitable, with an acceptable amount of downside risk. And we should know by now that "acceptable" isn't based on what average people might determine.
It’s all PR crap to raise money. As I’ve stated here numerous times I work in transportation with over 100 trucking companies nationwide. I’m not a trucker but I work directly with them coordinating bulk shipments.
And I can tell you firsthand it will be a minimum of 15 to 20 years before you see a completely self driving truck from start to finish from doc to doc. It will not happen. They take these trucks minimally equipped take them out on the street away on a straightaway highway and show you how they can drive themselves for 10 miles down the road. Then they beg the investors to invest. This has been going on for almost 10 years now. The infrastructure of shippers and receivers would cost hundreds of billions of dollars to transform to allow these so-called self driving trucks. Something that won’t happen in your lifetime.
If you’re a young person and you desire to get into trucking, it’s still safe to do so. You’ll get at least a 20 year career out of it.
I understand technology changes things and automation is a driver behind most things. I don't like the idea of all these truckers eventually being out of jobs. They along with train crews and cargo ships and planes are the backbone of the country. In raailroading they are trying to get to one man train crews over the road. It went from many men on a steam train in the 20s, 30s and 40s to more automation with diesel. In the 70s and 80s, the railroads realized they could cut out the caboose and go down to two men on an over the road train. I'm sure some evil little genius is always working on automated over the road trains, too
If you think sitting your entire life staring at a computer screen all day is a life worth living... well, I disagree. I'd rather clean ****houses. And I was stupid enough to waste nearly four years of my life in classes, thinking "coding" would actually be a tolerable job. Luckily I changed majors at the last minute. I'd probably have committed suicide of been completely insane by now if I hadn't. Ironically, I was top of my class at the time as well. I guess it just takes a certain type of personality to tolerate that crap.
