Doubtful. Also, why are people cheering such automation? Theoretically, how are people supposed to make money, in a world that's mostly automated?
As it stands now lots of truck drivers own their own rig. They could still do that but not have to drive it. And other more technical jobs will appear surrounding the self driving rigs.
Good until something goes loose or haywire, or a maneuver it’s not familiar with or programmed into it…. I can see all kinds of problems that can go wrong that could hurt humans.
Each year there are 500k accidents involving big rigs and 5,000 deaths. Fatigue is an issue as is inattentive driving. If we can get the number under 500k it will be an improvement. I would assume it would be way less.
I’ve heard that trucking is a miserable, dangerous job. If robots could do it, isn’t that a good thing?
Yes it is. All the negative nancy's on here. We need to automate jobs that people don't like to do and are hard to fill. Trucking, fast food and hospitality. But people have to be trained for different work. Jobs that are actually worth paying $15 or $20 per hour the wages burger flippers want today.
In a world where computers suddenly go offline or breakdown at any moment, not to mention the danger of cyber attack, the idea of massive trucks driving around without drivers is beyond scary.
What comes after this? Driverless school buses? Pilotless planes flying over schools, colleges, stadiums and hospitals?
The whole idea of driverless vehicles should be outlawed right now, unless it is on a especially well controlled track such as a monorail.
Real pilots make flight errors and commercial airlines are already on autopilot for 90% of the flight. Although a real pilot is monitoring the flight (if not taking a nap?).
The question is- which can drive more safely, human or automation? We don't really know yet but my bet will be on automation in the end once the tech is perfected.
Humans are horrible drivers and get distracted easily. What caused Tiger Woods vehicle to speed and cause an accident? One possibility is he was angry, or maybe he was unconscious. A vehicle with self driving tech would always be sensing what it's driver is doing and not allow speeding that would caused an accident.
Once perfected, self driving will reduce accidents by 99%. A truck driver may not see a vehicle in it's side mirror for some reason, maybe distracted, but the self driving truck will always see it.
"They" don't think that far ahead. Basically, this would move more to unemployment followed by welfare (public assistance), but at some point, there will be no one working to pay for the welfare. You do have those that believe that money grows on trees (liberals) and that all we have to do is pick it from the "rich" corporations and pass it out to everyone with a guaranteed monthly check (but most of us realize that while they can theorize this dream, in reality, it is horse poop).
The less people with jobs, the more we expedite our descent into a third world dive, like so many have come from that are storming our border!
And "80 miles stretch", well, that means they are a long way from being widespread. Imagine when the robot goes haywire, and how many people could die. Can a robot actually think its way out of danger, all the possibilities?
It is terrifying in so many ways!
Those without minor children cannot get cash welfare. They can get three months of food stamps every three years. The only way around that is if an employer grants the person either a paying or nonpaying job for 20 hours a week or if a medical professional signs a waiver saying that the person cannot work.

The reason you find mostly leftists support automation is the fact that it will bring about the world they want. If most jobs are automated (the tech is just about there) then the only economic system possible is socialism. Obviously in a world where 50 percent of the jobs are automated a society cannot leave half the population in perpetual poverty. That would clearly lead to a revolution. So the answer obviously has to be some kind of socialism. A socialist society is highly regulated and governed. A social society can enforce “social justice” as they see it. The left could literally impose all their dreams upon us.
I think its a good thing. Should put downward pressure on wages and inflation. The more robots the better.
Robot Truckers could replace 500K US Jobs
Several startups are betting on the robots, including TuSimple, a San Diego, Calif.-based company that says its self-driving systems reduce fuel consumption by as much as 10%. In December, the company removed its human chaperones on an 80-mile stretch of road between Phoenix and Tucson. It plans to start deliveries in large swaths of the country without human drivers by the end of next year.)
We’re getting to a real level of commercial viability,” said TuSimple Chief Financial Officer Pat Dillon, “which I think is pretty exciting.”

So, simply have universal basic income for everybody. Without it, trying to robot and automate everything will eventually cause a deep recession or depression.
