Republicans were down a touchdown with one play left and half the field to go in Wisconsin regarding redistricting for the state legislature, but thanks to a shocker of a decision from the Supreme Court, overtime has just been forced.

Previously, Wisconsin’s highest court had decided to use maps drawn by the Democrat governor after a months-long battle with Republican lawmakers. In doing so, the process hurdled past several legal issues that the Supreme Court decided were improperly ignored. Yet, the bigger story here isn’t actually about Wisconsin, and we’ll get to that in a moment.

As expected, the wailing and gnashing of teeth began immediately.

Some good news today. The implications of this go far beyond Wisconsin and imperil racially gerrymandering redistricting in almost every blue state (NY, CA, IL, MD, etc.)

Thanks for posting that!

One thing that I wondered about is how the redrawing of Congressional districts due to states gaining or losing population will occur. https://www.census.gov/library/visua...nment-map.html

It seems as if it depends on the state -- that each state doesn't handle this the same way. https://ballotpedia.org/State-by-sta...ing_procedures

I am wondering if the issue addressed in the OP will have an effect on that now, as well? Opinions?

Is it your position that Republicans don't draw up voting districts that are shaped like octopi?

Voting districts should be shaped, as much as possible, like squares. What we need are map makers to come in and square out all the monkey shaped districts.

One wonders if that is the reason Biden is shipping illegals to various states in the middle of the night.

As we know, it is not legal, for illegal aliens to vote, but I think there have been rulings saying they can be part of the headcount for the purposes of census, allocation of funding, and by extension what I bolded in your post.

The majority in Wisconsin agreed to the maps with the least amount of change which was the Evers map that was put in place in March by a conservative justice. The map they agreed to was pretty close to the republican gerrymander but they sued. SCOTUS found issues with both maps and asked them to either adopt a plan with less black representation or justify the evers plan. The republicans never complained about racial gerrymandering in the Evers plan until they challenged in the supreme court.

Once again republicans undermining voting rights to win elections.

Quote:
As Justice Sonia Sotomayor explained in a dissent joined by Justice Elena Kagan, this decision is “unprecedented,” “extraordinary,” and “unnecessary.” One fundamental problem is that, until now, no party raised an equal protection challenge to the legislative map. So Hagedorn had no opportunity to conduct a full constitutional analysis. Instead, in the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Republicans agreed that the VRA required multiple majority-Black districts in Milwaukee. They then ambushed the courts with last-minute complaints about an alleged racial gerrymander. SCOTUS rewarded their behavior, accusing Hagedorn of failing to undertake an analysis that no party asked him to undertake. There is “no precedent,” Sotomayor wrote, requiring a court “to embark on an independent inquiry into matters that the parties have conceded or not contested.”

If I was a Democrat, I wouldn’t worry. John Roberts will help them again. People forget he’s the main reason Trump lost.

People don't realize that the tilt on the Supreme Court is not 6-3 conservative-liberal/progressive, it's actually 5-4 because Roberts cannot be relied upon for anything

As with most things, the Democrats did it first in order to give themselves an unfair advantage and the Republicans scrambled to copy them in order to offset that unfair advantage.

Take a look at my state: Bluer than the sky, Illinois. https://free-printablemap.com/wp-con...strict-map.png

A closer look at the Chicago Metro area is very enlightening: https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gGjx1B5lg...congmapjpg.jpg

But just to make it obvious, take a look at Illinois Congressional District 4 all by itself: https://southsideweekly.com/wp-conte...istricting.jpg

Do you think that it was a bunch of Republicans that created that mess?? Not in a million years! Democrats have had a stranglehold on control of Illinois for decades!!
