Far more people suck off the government than anyone realizes. From personal experience I'd say most people have themselves to blame for being cash-poor. They'd rather spend every last cent on going to restaurants and buying toys which leaves them with nothing left over, and then the government bails them out when they get in financial trouble.
Whether it happens to individuals or corporations, it has always annoyed me. If you run out of money through your own negligence you should have to declare bankruptcy, not get a bailout.
This was the first year that we paid no income tax, and I did feel guilty about it until I realized that if it had not been for the pandemic forcing my husband's early retirement, we would still be making a large enough income that we would have had to pay taxes.
Before this year, we paid an increasing amount of taxes from the time we were both 18 years old, but we have never received any government benefits such as SNAP. In short, we have paid a LOT more in taxes than we ever received back in benefits.
And, then, when I realize how much stupidity and waste that federal taxes pay for, and how much goes to fund people who are not even citizens . . . !
I'm not a fan of the child tax credit. Never have been. Never been a fan of bailouts of any kind. If people can't afford kids, they shouldn't have them.
Ok, who are you and what have you done with the real Trobesmom?
Nope. It's right in the article. The biggest impact was the child tax credit. Payers became receivers.
The normal percentage of people not paying taxes each year is about 45% give or take. This year was a banner year due to government welfare.
From the OP's link:
The expanded child tax credit was a large factor. It substantially reduced "the income tax liability of more than a hundred million households and temporarily turned many from payers of small amounts of federal income tax to non-payers," Gleckman wrote.
I have not read the article, but the EITC reverses the flow on up to over $50K income if you have a few kids. In case no one notices, that is why walmart and bestbuy start stocking up on flat screen tvs and personal electronics in mid feb - typically the dullest time of the year - like they do in november - when the payout hits people head over and upgrade the TV. walmart aint no dummies.
https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/25/57pe...021-study.html I understand because of the pandemic the number rising. However these numbers are eye popping. Everyone says tax the rich, tax the rich, tax the rich however this is getting ridiculous at this point. Other than being an early teen delivering newspapers I paid taxes my entire life. This is bizarre to me!
That's fine, we covered it for them. I paid over $50k in Federal tax last year.
Too many folks on the couch collecting free stuff….but muh Republicans fault, tax the rich more, because Trump, etc…, lol…and now Sleepy Joes going to give out more free stuff to account for Bidenflation. Can’t make this stuff up.
Especially when 200,000 illegals per month are pouring across the Southern border.
Right over (with rope ladders) and through (with saws) the wall that Mexico paid for. Thank goodness Mexico paid for it, because if US taxpayers paid for it, that would have been a massive waste of taxpayer's money. Wait, oh.....
