How much of this stuff was staged 50 years ago? I bet it's a common theme throughout history.
Modern science and video has made it easier to catch people lying about stuff so we're definitely finding out more fakes now, however 50 years ago without all the technology and mass internet media a lot of stories never would have made it outside of local news.
Two big examples (famous) from back then would be Tawana Brawley basically faking an attack by white men to avoid getting in trouble by her parents. The other would be a Milwaukee doc that killed his wife and blamed it on a home invasion by black men.
Young black guy saw the story on news and went to cops saying that the doc had walked up and bought his hat he was wearing off him which unraveled the lie. Doc ended up on work detail with infamous cannibal serial killer Dahmer where he was beaten to death by another inmate along with Dahmer.
Speculation on my part that actual hate crimes substantially outnumber the hoaxes.
The hoaxes get more attention, especially on social media.
Maybe but it does seem as an awful lot of the high profile hate crimes that get a lot of attention before it is determined they are hoaxes do turn out to be fake.
There is no question there are racists and bigots of all backgrounds but they are a small percentage.
Racism today is certainly not like it was 60 years ago but...
I do feel all the emphasis on race by the media has increased the number of racists and just the everyday tension between people.

anyone who disagrees with the bolded is a complete idiot.
The word "hate" has been so overused on boomers using outdated pronouns, what word remains to describe what really is "hate"?
