Looks like it was a domestic violence issue, guy shot his three kids dead and himself.

Not saying this to minimize the horror of this shooting, but at least it wasn't a random public spree killing event.

Quote:
Five people are dead after a man opened fire Monday night at a Sacramento church and killed his three children, then fatally shot himself, authorities said.

A fifth person was also killed in the shooting, said Sgt. Rod Grassmann, a spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.

Actually, it IS true that homicides in the US peaked in the late '80's and early '90's. Take a look at this table and see for yourself.

Most made local news, pre internet, social media, online news, etc.

There is a huge difference between being aware and actual violence.

There are more firearms than people in the US. This horse left the barn a long time ago. And there’s no going back.
We've been awash in guns for a long time, that hasn't changed.

What HAS changed is that after lots of improvement in crime since the 80s/90s, we're reversing course.

People keep making excuses about how it "used to be worse 30 years ago", well it used to be better 2-3 years ago.

People aren't refuting that fact, but rather the use of it as a comparative to current murder rates as opposed to 3 years ago in order to downplay the recent increase.

Imagine a surge in lynchings and having someone point out that it's not that bad, they had wayyyy more lynchings back in the 1930's. Factually correct, not exactly a great response though eh?

Crime Stats 1960-2019:

https://www.disastercenter.com/crime/uscrime.htm

Reporting of Forcible Rape has substantially increased over time, attributed to change in state laws, including marital rape and how the crime ( victim) is prosecuted.

Violent,Property,Murder,Robbery, Aggravated Assault,, Burglary and Larceny Theft have substantially declined since peaks in the 80’s- 90’s.

When weighted by population, ( scroll down ^ link) the Homicide Rate is half of what it was at peak.

Unless one lived in the Sacramento metro area 30 years ago, we would likely not be aware of this mass shooting. It happened about 2:00 AM in an area with many bars and clubs. Thus far, LE has not determined if one or more victims were targeted or the number of shooters.

All media seem to play with raw numbers, rates and timeframes to create a perception we live in the worst of times.

There is perhaps no city in the US more maligned by media in terms of crime, than NYC.

https://www.disastercenter.com/crime/nycrime.htm

The Homicide rate was 14.5 in 1990 vs 2.9 in 2019.

well, this only goes back to 1990, but would seem to provide some support to her assertion

Well, it’s a good thing that we have laws that forbid criminals, especially felons, to possess firearms, magazines and ammunition. Also, I’m sure that these criminals followed California’s State law that forbid them from having any magazines with a capacity of greater than 10 rounds.

Also, being California, I’m sure that all the firearms used was from their firearm’s approval list.

Seriously, I wonder how many of these criminals had previous felonies dropped by the State?

How many were released from prisons way too early or actually never were sent to prison?

How many of these criminals never made it to prison, but only given “supervised” probation?

I think it does matter to maintain a perspective instead of getting caught up in “going to hell in a handbag” thinking.
