Unfortunately for the rest of the den, the pups will have to be euthanized as well (if not done already) in order to test for rabies.
yep. i hope they have a chance. from the comPost:
"Meanwhile, the animal’s kits — what fox babies are called — were found and “captured” Wednesday morning, D.C. officials said. Officials would not disclose where the kits were being kept or whether they, too, would be euthanized. City health authorities said in an email that they were “working to determine next steps for the fox kits.”
It's somewhat unusual for rabies to show up this early in the year, typically a bit later when it's warmer is when we see it in this area. I called it as rabies as soon as the news story came out.

"In the news today, a fox was found to have bit 9 congressmen outside the U.S. Capitol building. After days of excruciating pain while descending slowly into madness, the fox finally passed away."
I had the shots, Not an issue with rabies shot series. 5 shots over 5 weeks in the hospital. Reportable disease, state has to release vaccine and must be given in a hospital...the way it works in Nj Issue was GG by weight preceding initial shot!!!
you hang out for 20 minutes after each shot to ensure no negative response
Way back when the vaccine was give IP, internationally, because it was a large volume. Now just a couple mks of non viscous solution are injected.
Rabies virus can remain dormant, some say up to a year. If the rabies virus becomes active before you get the vaccine,,,YOU DIE
Critical to get the vaccine post haste.
No rabies survivors ...except one young girl in recent times and the old questionable reference to a mexican boy some time in ages past.
Victim in Nj last year. Rabies is endemic in wildlife populations.
And yes, opossums do gets rabies! though very rare for an opossum to get rabies. Probably because all other critters avoid the smelly possum. When annoyed, they smell like fetid garbage that sat in the sun for month. Fox trappers will abandon a dirt hole set if they accidentally catch a possum. Watch a red fox circle a possum one night, both went their way without ever touching. More of an avoidance dance. Got pics.
All warm blooded critters can carry rabies.
scratch by a squirrel running up your leg, get the shots!!!
Some docs will issue an order if a patient reports a bat flying around in their bedroom. Remember, if you do contract rabies ...YOU DIE!
No, they have less nasty treatments now but dang...if you don't get treated once symptoms show up it's 100% fatal.
Imagine most anti vaxers would make an exception and accept treatment.
