Another massively important point related to establishing a sustainable peace I've forgot to mention is the issue of the necessity of both Russia and Ukraine guaranteeing the rights of minorities living in their territories , particularly in the wake of a popular referendum that would result in boundary changes .
If for example the majority of the inhabitants of Crimea were to vote in favor of joining Russia , then the Russian government would have to guarantee the Crimean Tatars the right to use their own language to conduct official business as well as maintain their own cultural institutions and historical monuments to name the quite possibly three most important aspects of ethnic minority rights in Europe which cause controversy to this very day .
Other ethnic minorities would obviously have to get the same guarantees from the Russian state , including Ukrainians remaining in newly attached territories of Russia and also those who have already been living in the contemporary Russian Federation since its formation .
The Ukrainian state would likewise have to guarantee the same to those Russians , Belarusians , Rusyns , Hungarians , etc. , who would continue to live on its territory .
Naturally both states would have to do much to rein in those pot stirring radical groups which provoke minorities in both countries , not necessarily by banning them , but by stridently punishing them if they were to cross the line from simply shouting to vandalism/arson/assault and so forth .
I must once again emphasize that I am not writing in favor of the indispensable breakup of Ukraine in its current form , I'm only pointing out the obvious problems inherent in maintaining the unity of such a large state with artificially created ethnolinguistic boundaries , and suggesting that were a popular referendum under unbiased as possible international monitoring to be undertaken in parts of Ukraine currently under dispute then the way out of the current debacle could possibly be shown .
And in closing I'll merely state that peace is in the interest of all average citizens who have been made parties to this unfortunate conflict .
It's most certainly in the interest of those Ukrainians who are seeing their homes destroyed and lives upended as a result of this madness , as it is of both those Russian and Ukrainian soldiers who are being killed for no good reason so that their families can grieve at the actions of warmongers .
Average Europeans are also within the interest of peace , what with them already seeing hikes in prices and being subjected to fear not seen in a long time , as are average Americans who have ( just like their European counterparts ) already been fleeced of their tax dollars and may even have to look forward to losing many of their loved ones again .
Peace is only not in the interest of the same cadre of dastardly elites , reigning from their ivory towers in Kyiv/Moscow/Brussels/Washington who alone reap the rewards of this utterly senseless and avoidable calamity .
A new anti war movement is sorely needed .
And while I'm not a pacifist or much of a fan of Lennon/Yoko , I still say that peace must be given a chance :
