There was a Time when our Leaders were Fighters (not anymore----they're Cowards)

Trump did it too... didn't want any part any War.

The exemptions put both Biden and Trump in the minority among US presidents, as 29 out of 46 had at least some military experience before taking office, according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

Among more recent presidents,
  • George W Bush,
  • George HW Bush,
  • Ronald Reagan,
  • and Jimmy Carter
  • all served.

MOREOVER; Men like 'Andrew Jackson' not only fought in War, survived 100 Pistol Duals and even killed his opponent. Jackson was also shot, and then went on with a Bullet in his chest and fought another battle.

Amazing...

Where are have all the Great Men from America gone...?

Are there any Left?

Bill Clinton seems to have avoided going to Vietnam through "favors", "some deception or manipulation when necessary" and "luck".

Both Hillary and Obama were not up for the draft, but neither of them opted to voluntarily serve.

Our leaders? Biden has been in politics for 50 years.....Trump for 4 years. Trump had no intention of running for president, unil he could not take what was going on in this country anymore. He steped up, to make this country great again, and was doing a great job until......

Historical reality - US presidents with military service tend to be clustered due to the wars that were fought.

The first batch of presidents were of age to serve in the American Revolution. But several didn't. John Adams and John Quincy Adams were involved more in government and diplomacy. Thomas Jefferson was nominally a colonel in the Virginia Militia, but it was more of a ceremonial post. James Madison did try to serve, but was deemed too frail/unhealthy.

The presidents from 1829 to 1865 nearly all had some sort of military service, either some sort of militia experience with no actual fighting to generals who commanded troops and fought battles in either the War of 1812, the various Indian wars, or the Mexican American War.

The presidents from 1865 thru 1901 mostly served on the Union side in the American Civil War. The sole exception, Grover Cleveland, paid another man to take his place in the military draft.

The presidents between 1909 and 1945 who never served because the only major war for those presidents when they were of an age to serve in the military was the Spanish American War. Franklin Delano Roosevelt never served (despite his cousin Theodore Roosevelt encouraging FDR to enlist in WW1.

From 1945 through 1993, all presidents except for one served in the military during World War 2, the exception being Harry Truman who served in World War 1.

Since then, only George W Bush served in the military, and then in the Texas Air National Guard, which made him ineligible to be drafted to fight in Viet Nam.

The current presidential era, 1993 to the present, is analogous to the presidential ear from 1901 to 1945 - no major wars requiring full mobilization occurred.

George HW Bush, during a three way presidential debate in 1992, tried to score a hit upon Bill Clinton for never having served in the military and for having gone to Britain on a Rhodes Scholarship instead of being drafted to fight in Viet Nam. The third candidate in that debate, Ross Perot (a former officer in the US Navy), immediately slapped the charge down, noting that Bush had served in a much different war in a much different time and that it wasn't fair to compare 1940-1945 to 1965-1970.

I had hoped that this topic was done when we elected President Obama who was 10 when the draft ended.

I think Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar, so he was "too smart" to go.

What is it y'all support? People willing and anxious to serve in the military or anti war anywhere.

Viet Nam was a total scam. Get the commies there so we don't have to fight them here was what we were indoctrinated with each and every day.

Americans died. And the result of the DOW chemical Agent Orange defoliant used is still doing great harm to our service people.

Barry Goldwater told us for what we had spent invite Nam we could have bought it. And for the weekly how many we have killed report, we have killed every man woman and child in Viet Nam, twice.

So... should they serve or avoid it?

Did you miss the point on purpose? Anyone who purposefully avoids a fighting in a useless war but starts, or continues another other useless wars is shameful hypocrite.

And every war in our lifetimes has been useless, illegal, unjust, unconstitutional…

What in the world does that have to do with being President? It's always about policy and not some feel good he served America.
Served America? No, served oil interests.

The last war the US participated in that could be justified was when Pearl Harbor was bombed? And I’m not sure we have the real story or not.

Wars may be signed off on or pushed by a POTUS, draft dodger or not. The intelligence agencies and defense contractors are the deciders.

I’m not ready to endorse TFG’s position regarding those who join or are killed.
