What makes you think that Trump is so unpopular? He won a whoooooole lot more votes than the establishment candidates McCain and Romney did.

This is due to the population increase. Most presidential election candidates get "the highest ever" vote counts (in the general election), every 4 years. That's because there are more people in the US as time goes by. As the population increases, the number of voters increases.

Trump got 14 million more votes in 2020 than Romney did in 2012. Eight years of population growth doesn't account for all of that.
