Manufacturing added 55,000 jobs in April. Employment in durable goods rose by 31,000, with
gains in transportation equipment (+14,000) and machinery (+7,000). Nondurable goods added
24,000 jobs, with job growth in food manufacturing (+8,000) and plastics and rubber
products (+6,000). Since February 2020, manufacturing employment is down by 56,000, or
0.4 percent.
Jobless claims are simply a measure of how many people are out of work at a given time.
Jobless claims are reported in two sections: initial jobless claims, which represent new claimants for unemployment benefits, and continuing jobless claims, which are people who are continuing to receive benefits.
When a growing number of people willing to work are unable to find work, it is generally a poor sign for the economy.
But Labor force participation still at a generational low...
No wonder people have time to stand on the street with home-made signs screaming at each other...
True, but that is driven by the US aging population:
The national labor force participation rate for the total population ages 16 and over decreased from 64.4% in 2010 to 63.6% in 2019.
Despite the overall dip, the labor force participation rate went up across all age groups from 2010 to 2019:
Ages 16 to 19: 37.7% to 39.9%.
Ages 20 to 64: 77.5% to 78.3%.
Ages 65 to 74: 24.8% to 26.8%.
Ages 75 and older: 5.7% to 7.2%.
This apparent discrepancy in the rates can be explained by the sea change in the age distribution of the U.S. population.
So we are just trying to get back to pre-Covid (Trump) numbers.
Leisure and hospitality leading the way! These are notoriously low paying and generally seasonal, so of course they're leading the way as we enter the high peak summer season.
Shhh, don't tell anyone on CNBC that.
