"it would get the oil companies' attention"

The oil companies got the message LOUD and CLEAR.

President Biden said he was going to get rid of fossil fuels. HALF the Wall Street banks are refusing to lend to fossil fuel companies. Foundations and Universities have SOLD their fossil fuel holdings and will not invest in fossil fuel companies.

Everybody in the "Elites" world want the fossil fuel companies to cease to exist.

So if you were a oil company. Would you drill for more oil?? Would you increase pumping of oil??

Just so you could go out of business QUICKER??

Nah, admit it. You would keep doing what you were doing and start planning for the transition when you go out of business.

The oil companies are planning on going out of business in a decade of so. Hope your ready to pay the cost of the transition.

It will not be pretty for the middle class in America and Europe.

It's not that simple, for one. And it's rather zero sum anyway when you figure the energy that goes into converting food waste. If these byproducts were ready-to-use as is, it would be different. Plus, the bigger issue is the push to move away from all ICE use means literally all of them regardless of the fuel source.

“This is just rank price gouging. They can get away with it,” Newsom told reporters during a news conference in Sacramento. “They’re taking advantage of you, every single one of you, every single day. Hundreds of millions of dollars a week they’re putting in their pockets, lining their pockets at your expense, and then polluting this planet and leaving us all the external realities and costs associated with that.”

Newsom said there is no logical explanation for why gas prices in California are $2.50 a gallon higher than the national average. He dismissed speculation that it was because of refineries in the state undergoing maintenance, calling that “nonsense” because the work at oil plants occurs every year without causing such a major price disparity between California and the rest of the nation.

...The special legislative session on the oil tax will begin Dec. 5, when lawmakers are already scheduled to reconvene in Sacramento after the November midterm election.

Newsom said he did not want to call legislators back to the Capitol before that because his administration needs time to explore options for taxing oil profits, especially since he expects a fierce legal battle with mammoth, billion-dollar petroleum companies.

hmmm...sounds like intentionally lowering the supply;
I seem to recall hearing something about "supply and demand", and how it might affect the price of something

As much as I'd like to believe the governor will take a look at this, I don't buy it. For years, we've been told we pay a higher price due to the special blend of gas we produce here, so the air will be cleaner.

Now he says we're being gouged?

That we knew but don't pretend you care governor. Odd that you care now that we're close to election time.

OPEC cut production and a bunch of refineries have been down for maintenance. There's oil coming in...husband ties up the oil tankers here off West Coast. Also supply and demand. Biden likes to blame the oil companies but the poor guy has no clue.

Publicly traded energy companies suffered big negative earnings per share during Newsom's shutdowns, and Newsom didn't seem to care that individually held shares or shares in retirement funds, mutuals, etc. (almost all of them have energy holdings) took huge hits. But now that energy providers are making money again, Commisar Newsom wants to punish them. Welcome to Guatemalafornia...

p.s. When will PG&E be taxed for destroying those neighborhoods due to negligence? Oh, that's right, they're his special friends, so they won't...

California requires that gas stations must sell the special California blend of gasoline that is $3 more expensive than the Texas blend.
The California blend is produced at few oil refiners that must pay extra taxes and are subject to harsh regulations.
It can't be bought anywhere else.
