This is a short blurb from the Maudlin investment letter on the COVID lockdowns in China today.

Emily noted, astutely, that the government is implementing a variety of steps to mitigate the economic impact of the country’s extensive lockdowns. For instance, they’re allowing some companies to operate in a “closed-loop” system where the workers stay onsite and have no contact with their families or the public.

Steve Jobs, the Apple founder, was a great fan of the Chinese government, because they could easily order their workers to JUST WORK.

The primary company benefiting from the Communist government keeping Chinese workers working in Shanghai and away from their families is APPLE.

The Wall Street Journal had an article on whether China changed America or America changed China. The conclusion was that China changed former American companies like Apple into Chinese company values.

BIG TECH is evil.

There was a recent worker's riot at one of these places. These events never get talked about. No one anywhere can live a life of being purely exploited for profit. The government there is only as strong as the confidence the people place in that government and it's ability to suppress dissidents. Xi is being testing in ways no leader has been tested since Tiananmen square. Relying on a communist dictator to keep your workers under your thumb isn't a very good long term business strategy. But by all means lefties, keep investing in that. When they pull all their money out of the USA, close off their economy and keep everything you've invested over there, you won't get any sympathy from me or the rest of America.

While I hate communism, I love it when communists bite the hand that feeds them. I hope they bite it good and hard, so commie sympathizers and those who coddle them learn something this time.

Not true at all. Nobody can order the workers to work for Apple. It’s entirely voluntary.

The components for Apple's products are made all over the world. Most of the final assembly is in China by a company called Foxconn, but even Foxconn isn't a mainland Chinese company, they are based in Taiwan. In fact it's Taiwan, not the PRC that is so key for Apple.

An iPhone has American design, software, modems, antenna and audio chips, chipsets designed in America and manufactured in Taiwan, Korean screens and batteries, Japanese cameras, and German accelerometers.

It's just all put together in China.

we all love China. Why else would we buy all our stuff which is made there. Must of us couldn't possibly value saving a few bucks over anything so abstract as human rights and morality, could we?

Wal-Mart and Amazon retail have more do with our trade deficit with China than high-tech.

For things like computers, it's either buy the made in China one (with globally sources parts) or practically do without. They tried making computers decades ago here and the CEOs whined it was too hard. Apple does make a few versions that are made in the USA I believe. Macbook Pro I think. So if you don't mind spending $2,500, you can buy an assembled in USA laptop if you'd like. But the average American is not going to pay 2,500 when they can buy a windows variety laptop for $400 or even less sometimes.

Do you actually think China is a communist country anymore? Authoritarian certainly, but actually communist?
