There is no good CAS environment. It's about the most hazardous environment a pilot could not wish for. The A-10 was designed for basically this exact scenario. Attacking Soviet armored forces and ground troops should they have decided to come over the wall and thru the Fulda gap. The warthog would be facing almost the same Russian hardware and tactics as it was designed for. Sure they have better SAMs now but even the old SA3s they would have faced in Western Europe were bad news enough for a slow aircraft 200' off the ground.
