I trust multiple authoritative sources that say it was. You are just a guy on the internet.

Ukraine is a very recent example of a 'new' ethnic identity, and since it's so new, not everyone in Ukraine subscribes to it, which is why in the east, they decided to secede.
Not a bad post overall.

Except "they" didn't decide to secede. Putin decided they should secede after Putin's puppet Yanukovych fled the country and prospects of Putin controlling Ukraine through a puppet started to fade. The secession 'movement' originated in Moscow and took fruit under the efforts of such Russian agents as Igor Girkin and Russian special forces (the Spetsnaz). Russia continued to recruit veterans from the Russian army, born in Russia, for service in the region as "separatists". The Russian government provided the "separatists" with armored vehicles (including tanks) and rocket launchers as well as troops to man them.

The result was two harsh and brutal soviet style police states. There never was any doubt that these were just fronts for Putin's aggression against Ukraine. They were never actually to be a 'thing', they were designed to dissolve on cue.

Putin is on record as believing the Ukrainian people do not exist. He thinks of them as an inferior sort of Russian and he thinks of Kyiv as an historical Russian city, sort of a Russian entitlement, because it was the seat of power of Volodymyr (or Vladimir) the Great. His solution to the troublesome people is ethnic cleansing: he intends to remove Ukrainians from their homeland and move Russians in to take their places. That process, in case anyone hasn't noticed, has already begun.

Lol, Putin cannot make anyone secede if they don't want to. If Putin had that kind of power, he'd have the entirety of Ukraine secede from Kiev.

It's true that the rebels had some support from Russia, but they still decided to secede on their own. Since Texas is being used as an example, the American ranchers that came to Texas, decided to secede from Mexico on their own, but they of course got help from America as America wanted those lands.

Btw, I'm probably one of the few (vanishingly small % of) Americans who went to both DPR and LPR back in 2019. I even ate at the "DonMak" (imitation McDonalds) in Donetsk.

While the people in the DPR and LPR have this thing where they imitate the old USSR (even call it the People's Republic), there was an interesting wall near a memorial to kids who died in Lugansk. The Russians would spray paint USSR symbols (hammer sickle, red flag etc) and the Ukrainians would come in the night and spray paint Swastikas over it.

As much as Americans always want to see the world in black and white, good vs evil, I see no good people in this story. Americans, Ukrainians, and Russians have all behaved badly in one way or the other. But when it comes to survival, it only matters to two groups - Ukrainians and Russians. Everyone else, is a spectator and therefore we shouldn't be involved.

I think we're beginning to understand that simply saying you are 'elite" is not enough.

Zelensky has assured us that one of the first casualties of a Russian nuclear strike would be Putin. Putin will be "unable to preserve his life", says Zelensky.

Targeting heads of state is forbidden, but that won't make much difference if there is a mushroom cloud in Ukraine. Ukrainian teams or weapons will kill him.

Good video on how the Lockheed Martin HIMARS devastated Russian forces.
