This sounds like a bad idea, to arm teachers. Better to have armed officers in the school.
It's well beyond the time to have some thoughtful legislation nationwide to prevent 18 year olds from buying guns. If science shows the frontal lobe of an 18 year old isn't fully developed, and that leads to riskier behavior, some thought should be given to raising the legal age to buy a gun. I think the science is weighted toward mid twenties for full development. Of course this is only one part of a complex problem, but seems to be overlooked.
"AR-15
AR stands for “Armalite Rifle”, named after the company that developed this firearm. Contrary to popular beliefs it is not “assault rifle” or even “automatic rifle”."
"Putting guns in the hands of teachers is not to a good idea for a multiple of reasons."
Teachers are "smart" enough to teach our kids but, NOT smart enough to learn how to handle a gun?
Do you have a clue how many MILLIONS of our 18 year old boys have been "trained" how to handle a gun by our military?
Military training is completely different than training someone to have a shootout in a civilian arena with children in the room. There is a reason our military is not good at being the "World" "Police" and are not used for domestic policing, its counter to their training.
Again, the trained officers AT Parkland and Texas did not stop the shooter. Apparently in Texas the police officers that arrived on the scene first waited 40 minutes for SWAT before engaging the shooter. 40 Minutes from trained professionals and some people think a untrained teacher who took a "how to draw a gun and load safely" course is going to do better?
Onlookers have said they urged police to move into the primary school as officers stood by while a gunman was carrying out his rampage, which killed 19 students and two teachers.
The father of 10-year-old victim Jacklyn Cazares said he even suggested to go in himself with other bystanders as he was frustrated police were not doing it themselves.
You are totally excused for thinking that, because the media has spent 30 years misusing "AR" to replace "Armalite" with "assault" or "automatic" in your head.
The original semiautomatic sporting rifle chambered in .223/5.56 NATO and patterned in look/feel after the M-16 military platform was built by Armalite. So it became the de facto way of saying "semiautomatic sporting rifle chambered in .223/5.56 NATO", sort of like how all copiers became "Xerox machines" and all tissues are referred to as "Kleenex."
An "assault rifle" is a specific word for a carbine (short barrel) rifle that has selective fire, generally a choice between semiautomatic and fully automatic fire. Adolf Hitler actually coined the term because it sounded tougher than "submachinegun pistol."
Why the AR-15 styled platform is popular is because low recoil, easy to use, not very expensive, cheaper and more widely available ammunition and inside of 100 yards, anyone with decent motor function can be pretty accurate. That's why they are so vastly popular with the ladies, older people and range plinkers who don't like expensive range days or sore shoulders.
It's not because they are extra lethal, super deadly, scary, etc. It's because they are easy, cheap and reliable. Probably the best "inside 100 yards" solution for any number of tactical scenarios. I personally don't own one, because I like the big brother version of my semiauto 308. But I do have a bolt action 22 for marksmanship training because easy, cheap and reliable.
"You are totally excused for thinking that"
moneill is NOT excused.
He/she has been around here long enough and I'd bet been involved in other gun threads to know better.
Give every newborn a weapon so they can protect themselves.
When in school they can be surrounded with guns.
The Texas AG is nuts.
