Texas attorney general calls for teachers to be armed after massacre in Uvalde
"Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton repeated his call to arm teachers after a shooter killed more than a dozen children and one teacher at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. ...
"First reponders typically can’t get there in time to prevent a shooting,” he said. “It’s just not possible unless you have a police on every campus, which for a lot of these schools is almost impossible.” ...
"The reality is we don’t have the resources to have law enforcement at every school,” he said. “It takes time for law enforcement, no matter how prepared, no matter how good they are to get there. So having the right training for some of these people at the school is the best hope.”
My two cents: As well, $40 billion to help protect Ukraine, so $40 billion can be allocated to also harden schools and protect students in them for a very long time; cops can't travel at the speed of light to schools when responding to threats.
Paxton is an idiot for proposing the same thing over and over, spend more money training teachers and make the doors stronger, didn't we do this already. Complete madness from an idiot.
Texas Attorney General saying laws don't work, boy that's one for the record books. Yes don't focus on guns, keep repeating a failed policy with the hope that it will someday work out.
Quote:
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said gun laws are "not the right focus" after a mass school shooting in Uvalde.
He reasoned that there are already laws against murder and the gunman ignored those. "'Laws don't work' - guy who enforces laws," wrote White House Digital Director Rob Flaherty on his personal Twitter account.

It is Texas, so being armed might be fine for some teachers, but they can’t be forced. An armed security officer in every school, like Florida has implemented, is more practical.
Retired military and police would be a good source of guards.
You mean like the security guard at Marjorie Douglas in Florida who watched and cowered outside while teens inside were massacred?
And let me tell you. School staff snap. That's a real risk.
Also there are special needs kids in schools that can take your weapon and use it. Having everyone packing in a school is a horrible idea. The odds of friendly fire or accidents or a number of problems are high.
My solution is more of a campus style setup. Parents and staff move freely in and out but if you are not a parent or staff you can't just make up an excuse and come in.
That style of campus has been the norm for decades.
Mass shootings have happened in military bases as well.
Also, but sorry, I dun wanna live in a society where everyone is strapped. I hardly trust people in their CARS!
Clearly, you're not aware that approximately 400,000 citizens (non-cops) in your state of Minnesota are licensed to carry a concealed handgun nearly everywhere they go. Over 100,000 new permits were issued last year (2021) alone.
If you go out shopping, stop at the gas station to buy gas, stop at a restaurant to get something to eat, or go to almost any public venue, you very likely encountered numerous citizens carry concealed guns and you knew nothing about it.
So, while 400,000 is not exactly "everyone", it's sure a hell of a lot of people who are LEGALLY carrying firearms and that number is likely to grow at the rate of about 100,000 per year in your state for the next decade or so (in my opinion).
Also, it seems that you are not aware that almost no one on a military base in the US is carrying a firearm except for a few MP's.

You acknowledge that many laws don't work (at least some of the time), yet your proposal to fix the problem is to pass another law making the possession or ownership of guns by many people illegal. Why don't we just pass a law that makes the killing of school children illegal? Oh wait!
So, if teachers are to be armed, I have some questions:
* How much additional compensation will teachers receive for their expanded role?
* What will the school's liability be for any incidents involving a teacher's firearm?
* What responsibility will school districts take on in ensuring teachers receive the appropriate training and practice necessary to maintain their qualifications?
* What obligation will a teacher who carries have during an incident? Will he or she be expected to stay in the classroom or respond to another area of the school if there's a threat?
* How will firearms and ammunition be secured during the school day?

Legit questions that should be debated and voted by democratic legislation by each state and amended later with data and priority which is protecting schools. This to me is a lot better than passing symbolic laws that won't do anything but to make people feel better at night.
