That is just how it is. its not going to change, no matter how many children are shot dead. Its human nature, in a week or two, the board will be filled with whatever is a hot topic then.

You can go thru the pages of threads on this board, going back many years to see that topics die off eventually, and new ones replace them. It is what it is.

How many 9-11 threads do we see these days? Hardly any, but this was the 2nd largest attack in the history of our country!!

Time truly does heal all wounds, its unavoidable.

These gun grab people are wasting what little gray matter they have.

Once we accept the obvious, perhaps we could go from there. The obvious is that a criminal WILL get a gun if he or she wants one. Now, folks, assume that to be the case and see if you can come up with a useful, non-non-criminal-punishing solution.

Its tough because there is NO WAY to regulate or stop this. thats why it frustrates so many people.

The low-life murderer of children and teachers in Uvalde, TX could have killed just as many people with a shotgun. He didn't need a semi-automatic rifle. That's simply what he had, but it played no real role in how many he killed or how deadly the weapon was.

In fact, given a (tough) choice, if I had to select which gun I'd "rather" be shot with at a distance of "across the room", I'd pick the rifle. The shotgun is every bit as deadly, if not more so, as a rifle at distances under 40 yards. So, are you proposing to confiscate everyone's rabbit gun or squirrel gun?

A responsible, mentally competent, experience, licensed, trained, long-time gun owner should be allowed to buy an AR-15, or even a more powerful weapon.
So to explain that guns don't need restrictions, the first thing you talk about is restricting who can own certain types of guns..

If we go down this road, what you are basically saying is that 18-year-olds should be restricted to a "starter" gun. What types of guns should an 18-year-old be allowed to buy? How many years must a person own these "starter" guns before they can buy an AR-15? The shooter in Texas apparently passed all of the background checks and nothing showed he was troubled. What would you do differently to prove someone's mental state?

You talk about training. What type of training would you require? To put it bluntly, the Texas shooter didn't accidentally discharge his weapon and injure a few people, it seems as if he knew exactly how to use it. What sort of "training" would have changed this?

We've made virtually NO progress in stemming the use of guns for slaying numbers of people over the past couple of decades.

Maybe people use the AR-15 thing as a place to start. Likely most have no idea what it even is, but for them, it puts a label on things.

Will banning assault rifles stop the killing? Probably not. It might put a dent in the numbers, but there are still many, many pieces of iron out there which are nearly as effective at killing small children, or adults.

What we really need is to remove the scourge of guns completely. America is not ready for that yet, so people use a small slice (assault rifles) as a place to start. No doubt they are a nasty killing machine and people can envision the damage which they cause when fired into a human being.
