No...it's NOT a binary! There are degrees of security. Even if there were checkpoints at the front, that would have done NOTHING for Uvalde since it was a side door that was left propped.
It was not propped at the time the shooter got in, it was just unlocked by accident. Most school doors are naturally locked these days.
What about the busses? Stadiums? Field trip locations? Churches? Summer camps?
We can't security harden our way out of this problem.
Very simple, set up bars on the windows and doors of classroom. Call dismissal for the day "parole."

Unless you are going to turn the schools into prisons it shouldn't matter. If our schools the only locked entrances and exits were those that were "emergency only" and whose egress was not onto areas that were normally accessed.

Obviously we cannot deal with all situations everywhere. But wouldn't it be nice if children could go to school everyday without worrying about being shot? Let them grow up feeling secure.

There is a difference between a prison and a fortress.

Which do you think is better for children of those two?

Neither. A one way in/out which both a prison and fortress would ask for is just too impractical to implement except during the actual school day itself. Just too many students (especially a huge high school) and staff to let through and try re-routing parking lots and bus loops to help with that, many are designed with a staff lot and an office lot...
