How about the packaging for that new toy for the kids? How much PLASTIC is there?

And, how about that medical equipment at your doctors office? Any PLASTIC there?

Or, that IV line?

Yes, consumption of gasoline can be reduced - somewhat.

But, it is not the only demand this nation places on the use of oil.

We have so many oil based products out there - I think we often forget that.

And this chair...

And almost everything???

Luckily I am typing on a wooden keyboard so I can feel smug and superior...but don't be concerned it was made from driftwood so the tree was already dead.

LOL time for Americans to go on a gasoline diet. Walk, ride a bike, take the bus or buy a 50 mpg car. Put that SUV up on cinder blocks in the front yard a plant flowers in it.

Folks in Appalachia love their land more than most but we still manage to manage the land and keep it a place that more and more people seek to move into.

Someone pass me a wrench and a piece of pipe.

What alternatives?

What will replace oil in vehicles, plastics, fuels, etc, etc?

So using oil is not a problem,as long as you use it in an approved manner?

The ending of the US consumer driven economy that is currently unfolding will take care of the respective demand.

Shale might help to meet the needs for oil in terms of ancillary purposes (non-refined oil for gasoline)

When we were looking at land in KY, there were quite a few of wells scattered about the area...most were capped as it was uneconomical at the time.

I udnerstand that there are 2 billion others thirsty for oil..no matter how much we cut back...but we have the knowledge of what is coming and what are we doing about it? You think putting oil fields in everyone's backyards will solve anything? Nope...you can keep running around looking for oil..or take steps in your life to prepare for the inevitable...crazy prices for everything due to very expensive commodities of all kinds.

Here are some suggestions:

1-Downsize your home. Do you need a 4 bed/3 bath 3000 sf home 10 miles from where you work? Probably not...try 1/2 the size!
-Downsize your commute. Why live 20 miles or more from work? Buy a smaller place closer to work and/or downtown area
-Move somewhere with easy access to public tranportation...gas can go to $8 a gallon..but your bus/train fare will only be moderately impacted.
-Get rid of the large SUVs, and mltiple vehicles! Try more efficient vehicles, or just get rid of them altogether and live in the city.
-Reduce your consumption for everything = less waste = more money in your pocket.

Just some ideas...but yes we know the storm is coming...but NOW is the time to take action. Or you can just sit on these boards and complain, blame the world, and be miserable/negative. With any luck..the costs of these commodities willenergy a point
in which we will all be forced to do these things...and we will be a stronger, happier, healthier coiuntry for it.

Actually, it's good to see the free market work. Lots fewer cars on the road for folks like myself to wrestle with.
