So 6 seems to be the magic number. That implies that 6 dead children is acceptable. No? Ah, you see where this is going, right?

No, it did not.
It only affected a couple of mostly cosmetic changes.

Guns being the problem instead of those that misuse them in crimes area far cry apart from one another.
It's a people problem and not their tool of choice.
In that area I guarantee that psychological mind set and lack of valuing life are a problem likely even larger than full out mental illness.
Society has been degraded fast by sick ideologues.

The AR-15 or "Armalite Rifle" was developed in the early 1960s and adopted by the US military in 1964. I am pretty sure I never heard the term "assault rifle" applied to civilian guns used by any news media outlet before the late 1980s. The term was exclusively used to describe automatic fire military hardware.

Civilians with AR15s in the 1970s and early 1980s simply called them "AR-15s". Pretty simple that.

The term "assault rifle" was hijacked by gun banners for nefarious political purpose, rather than Armalite coming up with a controversial name in 1963, which merely used the company name. Armalite. Armalite Rifle 15.

I'll start:

1. The 1994 "Assault Weapons Ban" banned assault weapons. FALSE.
2. "You can't kill a dozen people in a minute with a handgun." FALSE.
3. AR-15s are very powerful...too powerful for deer hunting. FALSE.
4. There are no background checks on firearms sales in many states. FALSE.
5. AR-15s are not used for hunting. FALSE.
6. "Mass shootings only happen in the USA." FALSE.
7. "Most mass shooters use AR-15s." FALSE.

What other whoppers have you seen by these people lately?
I am not sure why the US gun debate concentrates on the AR-15.

Other countries were more concerned with center fire weapons and capacity rather than a specific type of gun,

As for Hunting, the most popular weapons are rifles, with the most popular manufacturer being Tikka, followed by Sako and Blaser.

Among the most popular Hunting rifles are -

1. Tikka T3

2. Blaser R8

3. Sako 85

4. Howa 1500

5. Remington 700

6. Browning X-Bolt

Whilst among the best affordable shotguns are the -

1. Beretta 690 1

2. Beretta Silver Pigeon

3. Browning 525

4. Browning 725

5. Rizzini

6. Blaser F16

7. Miroku MK60 and MK38

8. Guerini sideplate

Fits right in with the question of the thread title.

Back when they named the A[rmalite]R[ifle] platform (1956) "assualt rifles" weren't a controversial thing, though.

I'm betting Mr. Stoner and ArmaLite didn't have a crystal ball that works any better than mine does.

While this is true you need to look on the bright side. Every year, 20 to 25 thousand gun owners shoot and kill themselves with their own guns...

So while they tend to be a bit insensitive to those victims of mass shootings, and they are a bit over the top on their resistance to common sense gun control laws (as evidenced by this thread)... they should be lauded for the "Gun Owner" control that they are willing to practice for the sake of the cause.
