Knock yourself out. Pride month has been happening for years. Most have no problem with it. 70 percent of the country supports SSM. The anti-gay crowd is vastly out-numbered.
And even more so by the younger generations...the old generations of intolerant *******s can't die off soon enough.
Someone being gay was used as a reason by police to harass, beat and arrest. Have you heard of Stonewall nightclub in NY? Gays were targeted by police, this was common place for gay people in the 60s and before. It’s only thru activism that this isn’t tolerated anymore.
Check out The Lavender Scare when our government thought gay people were a threat to national security. There was mass dismissal from government jobs. Gays were discriminated against in almost every aspect of life for decades. Don’t ask don’t tell. I’m not up on the latest regulations in the military now but your sexuality shouldn’t be something that stops you from serving your country
It’s much deeper than someone not liking who you are.
You're talking about stuff, while certainly appalling, is in the past. I'm talking here and now. There's been huge progress in recent years regarding gay rights, but the its seems like some folks want to continue fighting a battle that's already been won. Government sanctioned mistreatment of the LGBTQ+ community is a mere shadow of it's former self. It reminds me of people who think the KKK is still a threat by pointing out things they did 50 years ago.
Regardless, I'm happy about the advances made in recent years, but I'm still struggling with the need for PRIDE events. To be clear, its not that I want them banned, I'm just genuinely curious as to what there is to be so proud about. My sexuality is what it is. I'm no more "proud" of it than I am about the color of my eyes or the size of my feet.
So here's the difference w/ that...a gay pride parade doesn't cost Tax payers that much...just the cost of shutting down a few streets for a couple hrs and maybe some OT for local Law Enforcement...Taxpayers aren't paying for the floats or anything else.
A huge military parade similar to what you say at Mayday in Moscow, or in Beijing is going to cost taxpayers a lot...not only do you close roads down and pay for law enforcement...you're paying the cost of moving very expensive military equipment from their bases to the parade route...city streets weren't made to handle the weight of some of those military tanks and other equipment, so they would need to pay for street repairs...you'd have to pay all the cadets and military personal extra to march...
It varies. Here in Vancouver the PRIDE Society pays for the police presence.
