European cities in most countries are severely dense, making the need for public transport a #1 priority over there. They do not drive like we do, 30 miles to work and back for many people, sometimes even more. Walking or riding a bike is a real possibility.
America is probably the largest country in the world that possesses a suburban unit. Most countries do not have suburbs. They go from city, to rural. The suburb is not a concept to most people in the world.
Our dependence on transportation is such that it is impossible to live without it. If the price of gas goes up too much higher, I see a lot of problems facing a lot of people. Think about it. When gas was 2 bucks a gallon, it would take $20 to fill up a 10 gallon tank. That is 80 a month on fuel.
At 3-$30 to fill, $120 a month.
Now, at 4-$40 to fill, $160 a month.
If gas was to go up to say $10 a gallon, that would be $100 to fill up, $400 dollars a month.
This figures in the price of a 10 gallon tank, which is mine, and I fill up once a week. Most people spend more than this.
Food prices will go up too, by a lot. Many people will struggle just to pay for groceries.
Our economy is based on oil. The price of oil has gone up 400% in the last several years. A couple years back (4), it was $30 a gallon. Now it is in the $130's. If gas rises the rate it has in these last two years for another four years, the price of gas will be around $12 a gallon by 2012, which will effectively destroy our economy way before then. Whoever gets elected this next election cycle is going to be blamed for a lot of problems, and will get to bare the fullness of a population that is angry, hungry, and longing for a life that is effectively gone.
Also, we will see the downfall of suburban America as people move much closer to the cities in an effort to cut driving times to work.
