I don't like that they were unescorted and that they did not have press credentials. When I worked in the media in my state capitol, I knew not to go where I was not allowed and to have visible press creds at all times. In some places, you had to be escorted at all times. It might just be an aide to someone, but they stuck to you like the old saying "white on rice." It was their job. At the State House, we went through metal detectors. Once in, we could roam around some parts of the building, but not all. We could not get in the legislative sessions with credentials and also a coat and tie. I never wanted to do anything to make my station look bad. If enough people do that, your station could lose credentials. Maybe being staff at a comedy show, they did not know all the rules. I am cynical about that. It's not a good look for CBS or Colbert. I think the trespassing charges will stick.

They were being goofs, they work for Colbert, Democrats like them, so nothing will happen.

It does however, give the right a bit of juice for clowning. That's about all that will come out of this.

Exactly. I'm wondering if they were pranked, by people who claimed to be democrat staffers but weren't.

What motivation would Schiff have, to escort Colberts staff into this building, after they'd been told to leave earlier at the 1/6 hearings?

His motivation was that they were filming a skit about Jan 6th, which would most obviously be used on the Colbert Show to clown/hurt/insult Republicans, and it's uhm...campaign season?

Free negative campaigning that comes out of nobody's PAC donations, and can be written off as Colbert and his folks just doing some goofing around. Schiff's motivations are simple enough, and if I am on his staff, I'd totally agree with the decision to give them the unofficial assist.

There very well could be a misunderstanding somewhere. Or maybe they thought there ere above the rules. Maybe there is faulty reporting somewhere. If you are asked to leave because you don't have press credentials, you don't get to be let in by an aide who lets you have unfettered access. Maybe they're just stupid and don't know this. It's not good look either way. I'm leaning toward them not being "pranked" though.

I doubt Schiff himself would allow this. Not a good look for him if he did.

Here is what CBS said about the incident.

Quote:
CBS issued a statement Friday night saying: “On Wednesday, June 15, and Thursday, June 16, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog was on-site at the Capitol with a production team to record interviews for a comedy segment on behalf of ‘The Late Show.’”

Their interviews at the Capitol were authorized and pre-arranged through Congressional aides of the members interviewed. After leaving the members’ offices on their last interview of the day, the production team stayed to film stand-ups and other final comedy elements in the halls when they were detained by Capitol Police.”
‘Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ staffers detained in U.S. Capitol

What we are hearing from various sources is not adding up. We should learn the truth soon enough though. I'm just happy to see that the right cares about security breaches at the Capitol now.

Joe, from your post above, THIS sounds completely right.

After the production they were invited to was over, they overstayed. That sounds right to me.

I could see a situation where they somehow got into the building without credentials and did their interviews with the people they were to meet. Then they get into the hearing -- again without credentials, somehow -- and then get thrown out. They hang around outside of the building making phone calls about getting thrown out. For some reason, they are let back in, unescorted, and begin shooting stand ups at which point they are arrested. It actually sounds rather ridiculous. The security at that building must suck. On the other hand, there are so many conflicting accounts that I don't really believe any of them without an official source. I have to think at my former station in Columbia, had I done that, I'd be out of a job right now and facing trespassing charges.

I'm watching a late night talk show for the first time in many years other than clips on YouTube. "The Muppets" are introducing the January 6th Show on Colbert. I miss Carson.

Colbert on Ivanka's testimony before the Committee. "That must have been very bittersweet for the former president. His daughter finally screwed him."

I actually think this is an old episode. Nothing yet about yesterday's hearing. It's all about the prime-time hearing. (Yep. Just looked. It's a repeat of the 6/9 show. I'm turning it off now.)
