They can click on any sporting goods store and see firearms for sale on the front page. But then, if they don't know what they are by definition they wouldn't know to look for it.

Not true, actually.

If the M249 or Thompson submachine gun were made prior to 1986 AND you have the money AND you do all the correct paperwork, you can own M249s or fully automatic Thompsons.

My brother-in-law's next door neighbor owns 4 different fully automatic weapons, all of which are perfectly legal. He's rich, he collects guns, and he follows the laws as written.

If only I knew I would have bought one. You used to be able to buy them fairly cheap too.

Manufacturers most commonly simply made rifles that deleted the flash hider and bayonet lug, leaving a rifle with a pistol grip and telescoping stock.

The bayonet lug had absolutely zero affect on performance whatsoever...you just couldn't attach a bayonet. Not many people did that with ARs anyway.

The lack of the flash hider simply increased the perceived muzzle blast to the user (I guess your eyes have to suffer), but it in no way affected the overall performance of the firearm.

That's it. Millions of "post ban" guns that had every familiar feature of the AR-15 with the exception of the flash hider and the bayo lug were sold.

Some states took it even further and required all of those things to be deleted instead of just 3, and "California Compliant" rifles were sold with fixed stocks without pistol grips.
Just as dumb as making sound suppressors illegal. They protect hearing and are NOT silencers.

Yes it is. We wouldn't have to wear ear protection if it was legal. A firearm's bullet going over the sound barrier is still loud. Unless we are watching movies.

And a Senator, Chris Murphy bellowing about "weapons of war". How do these people that know nothing about weapons, OR war get a voice in a topic like this? Apparently people still eating it up.
