We really should stop using dogs for law enforcement entirely. There's no reason why an electronic sniffer can't be used except some misguided sense of "tradition" that really doesn't go back that far.
You are really clueless in this area aren't you? I could do this all morning but I'll highlight one particular case I am very familiar with. I was not the officer in question but a friend of mine was. Many years ago someone called in a complaint of a man and woman fighting behind a K-Mart. This store backed up to a very large area of woods. This K9 handler got there and observed a man coming out of the woods covered in blood. He was taken into custody and this handler used his K9 to track back where the man came from. This track ran a few hundred yards back into these heavy woods and he located a lady laying there suffering from many stab wounds from a knife. She somehow survived but would have quickly died had it not been for this team and their quick actions. Please tell me how a "electronic sniffer" could be used in a case like this?
Next time you have a very graphic story could you please give a warning first, something to let another reader know your telling something graphic and upsetting!
K-9's can be very helpful sniffing drugs or bombs, but I do not agree with using them to send into homes for domestic violence or other related domestic disturbances. I have read too many stories of those dogs dying in the line of duty.
I also have read too many stories of k9 dogs dying in police vehicles due to heat exhaustion, which is completely preventable and yet every year a police officer forgets his dog in a vehicle.
In regards to Governor Desantis signing a law to give these dogs lifetime vet care, that is admirable and should be implemented in every state.

Glad there will be financial help for those who adopt these brave dogs when they retire.

Very graphic story? LOL. No different than the newspaper article that comes out. No warning needed on these. We're in the Political section so I kind of doubt kids will be in here reading this boring stuff.
Where are you getting your info? Domestic disturbances? Not hardly.

A K9's nose is many more times sensitive than any portable "electronic sniffer".

Dogs love to work and are healthier when they have a job or purpose in life other than sleeping and chasing an occasional ball.
Healthcare guaranteed for some dogs, but not most of the residents? Yep, sounds about right.
