The former POTUS made this a staple of his 2016 campaign. I whole heartedly agreed that DC is filled with corruption, cronies etc.. However the cabinet appointments was the antithesis of this goal and merely added to the "swamp" of DC.

The fact that many supporters of the former POTUS speak of deep state, and whole institutions that should be eliminated (see the recent raid of Mar-a lago) you would have to admit that the swamp draining never occured and could argue that the swamp increased under his leadership.

Unfortunately there are not enough outsiders like Trump who are willing to serve in government, so Trump had to fill positions with swamp creatures. Would a CEO of a company making millions want to give it up to work for the government for $100,000 for a few years?

The swamp coalesced against Trump, exposing all the critters.

First of all, if these people are already making millions, they could afford to take time off to serve their country, like most of our Founding Fathers did.
Many considered it their duty to serve, but looked forward to only serving one term, so they could get back to their normal lives.

As to Trump's appointments,

Sure no one is perfect, but Trump bragged about how he was going to make the best choices, with only the most qualified (and presumably no swamp dwellers).
While his intention was good, he made some bad choices, probably as bad as his predecessors. So what does that say about his judgement.

Yes correct. We simply don’t enough money or resources to drain the swamp.

None of Trump's predecessors had half the people quit in disgust, or get fired because they refused to do Trump's corrupt bidding.

None of Trump's predecessors had people who were hired on with glowing praise who later were called all kinds of vile names by the President who hired them.
(I think of Trump blowing kisses at James Comey and still have to chuckle).

None of Trump's predecessors has had so many people write tell all books after serving in their administrations describing their president in a bad light.

Drain the Swamp? LOL. All Trump did is bring a three ring circus to the swamp. It was a three ring circus like nobody has ever seen before.

Trump was naive. He underestimated the power of the swamp, deep state, or permanent government (or whatever you want to call it), while overestimating the power of the presidency, which has quite a few checks and balances unlike a CEO.

Also, when they took down General Flynn, that caught the attention of everyone, including Jeff Sessions and Mike Pence, and they both folded like a house of cards.

Trump has experience now and knows how to fight this entity, that’s why he is so dangerous to them and they will do anything to stop his 2024 bid.

a campaign run by Paul Manafort and Roger Stone with the slogan "Drain the Swamp" should have been a parody.

unfortunately i can't see how things can change without significant campaign reform and i don't see that reform happening in the wake of citizens united.

Disagree to a certain extent. Trump realizes how established wealthy and organized the oligarchs are. Step one is shining the spot light on them and acknowledging that they exist. This in of itself is a challenge as half of America is still clueless on this topic. But Americans need to understand that there is a group of wealthy individuals who run the world. When in doubt follow the money. There’s your clue. Who controls the global money supply? Do you think they have goals and objectives? Do you think they have enough money and power to buy and control governments and politicians? The answer to all of these questions is a definitive YES.

To a certain extent Trump was successful identifying the Swamp. This had never really been done before.
