Yep. Started happening quite some time ago. I never signed up for anything Trump related, but somehow started getting "Trump" emails in my inbox several years ago. (Cause Google doesn't spy on anyone, no.)
They were always asking for money. There were many, meaning they were from various supporting organizations or groups, not a single one actually from Trump. (No, I don't give money to politicians, or those who want to be politicians, no matter how much I support them.)
Then, suddenly, they all started appearing in my spam on gmail.
On the other hand, I once signed up to Debbie Wasserman Shultz using an old FL address, just so I could keep up with the bs talking points of the left. They still show up in my main inbox, to this day.
It's been several years that this has been going on. Wondering why this is suddenly a story.
It's an account I've had since 2004. I have friends everywhere around the world. A lot of time can go between us talking or seeing each other, but no matter what, they know how to reach me because I've kept that email address. I use it only for that reason, bills, and to collect the spam that some companies like to send out to you after claiming that they never sell your information.
For everything else, I use Proton.
Yes, I keep my FB account because I have a sister who basically demands I have one! And I pretty much hate FB.
I've been looking into Proton and other services.
But don't we all already know how Google and FB make their money? And haven't we known for a long time? I see no reason to get outraged by it, they are private companies, there are plenty of alternatives out there. And don't we all know how private companies act, having been surrounded by them for all our lives?
Remember when Obama proposed regulating the internet as we do utilities? If we had made that decision then, Google would not be allowed to take the kinds of actions that it manifestly does take.

I'm not outraged by it. I laughed at it, knowing full well how some of these tech companies act. Oh no, they decided to control my spam email address.
If ever anyone needed any more proof about the spying, I'll share a story:
In CA, my old car wouldn't start. I got a new battery that didn't solve the issue. I was at my car at the complex I lived in, looking at the engine, as if I had a clue what to do. Someone visiting a neighbor asked if I needed help. Long story short, got my car towed to the mechanic with their AAA. Rode in their car with them to the mechanic, they gave me a ride home after diagnosis, and when car was repaired, they told me to call and they would take me back there. Genuinely nice people. Well, I entered her phone number into my phone. I put a contact name.
The next thing I know, I'm suddenly getting emails in my spam email gmail account with HER name in the title, which was not a common name. They weren't from her, obviously, and she didn't even know my email address.
After I removed her phone number from my contacts, I no longer got emails from her name.
As for government involvement, the less the government gets involved, the better. I don't need them to 'protect' me. Eventually, I'll find another map that will work with my car, and I'll find a non Apple or Android phone that still works with my work apps, and the only thing those nosy bastids will have is my email that I use for spam, and those friends who periodically write in to find out where I am.
