It sounds so scary! Is that real, or just another alarmistic warning?

This is happening across the west due to extreme drought conditions. They are also selling off their herds of cattle for the same reason. Google this subject and you will get numerous hits reporting this. Here's one:

This year's drought conditions are taking a harder toll than last year's, as 37% of farmers said they are plowing through and killing existing crops that won't reach maturity because of dry conditions. That's a jump from 24% last year, according to the survey.

We will see food shortages in our near future as a result.

The alarms are sounding and some are ignoring them, some are listening and others are hyping them.

It does seem that in the future oil/gas is going to be scarce which means the prices will be high. It does seem that certain foods will also be in short supply due to this and that from supply chain issues to management incompetence. What we do know is that the Biden admin will be in the middle of it all and they will either be the cause of it with their stupid policies or they will try to help which will make matters worse. There is a third option for the conspiracy minded that they are doing all of this on purpose. They want us to feel the pain to take us down a notch and make more of us reliant on them for our daily needs.

What does the average American do when they go to the grocery store to find bare shelves and what is available is really expensive?

How have we gone from the Land of Plenty, the land of Hope to such dire straights in 19 months?

Yes, damn that Biden for causing this long drought! Trump would have made it rain!

It's a drought. It's happening. Trying to turn a drought into a political talking point is really ridiculous. But on this board this is exactly what happens again and again.

Meanwhile, the weather doesn't care who is in office.

It is true the drought hit western farming much harder this year than last, and last year was a very bad price year for crops.

Here where I live, potatoes have always been a very large and important crop. Throughout the 21st century, potatoes have kept their prices very well, mostly due to high export levels. The exports helped keep the domestic prices down, as they made up for the diminishing American appetite for potatoes.

When the tariffs of 2019 and 2020 set in, they hit the spud farmers hard. All that export market that had been developed for 20 years evaporated in a year of drought. The lower prices were ridden out the first year, but by the second year, they took a bite out of the farmers. Then in the 3rd, an even bigger bite was taken by a small crop and low prices in 2021.

This year, the combination of drought and low prices was just too much for many farmers. They didn't plant potatoes.

In 2018, a field price of $10.00 for 100 lbs. of spuds was a very good price.
I just learned yesterday that the field price now is $27.00 for 100 lbs.

That's how small this year's crop is. That price is higher than any in my life. It means there is a large shortage of potatoes word-wide this year, and it is due to the drought in the North American west, combined with the drought in France and the Mediterranean, combined with the drought in parts of South America and the South Pacific.
