MS, like LA, has an oligarchical history. This helps those in power but does not attract industry or help the poor.

Let's say it is.

Between 1932 and 2004, Magoffin County generally voted Democratic in presidential elections, however it has voted Republican since then. It voted for Democrat Andy Beshear for Governor in the 2019 election, but Republican for all other statewide offices.

The last active coal mine in Magoffin County closed in 2015. Major employers now include several coal truck businesses

I can always tell in these threads who didn't pay attention in high school Government class by how many of you don't understand the separation of governmental responsibilities between State and local governments.

I'll give you some hints:
Local:
non-State roads
police and fire services
water and sewer service

State:
State roads
State parks
State Police

One question no one, and I mean absolutely no one, has answered yet is how long did the Jackson city government put off maintenance and upgrades to the water system. The EPA has been steadily tightening up water quality standards, and sewer standards for that matter, for the last twenty plus years. And while they use a "carrot and stick" approach they do not hesitate a mili-second to haul out the stick and "can't afford it" is not accepted as an excuse.

It's better to refine the info. According to a Pew study 21% of democrats have ever used food stamps, 17% of independents and 10% of republicans.

Like the coal communities when coal died....why did we ever think we had to help those communities.
well, it is indeed true that not every single community can be sustained merely by what it's history was at some point. Gold rush towns in CA and NC, once-thriving communities where agriculture was produced nearby and moved by river downstream. etc etc.

What the visionary leaders are supposed to do is "how do we adapt?" "What's our next opportunity?"

Mississippi produces more than half of the country's farm-raised catfish, and is also a top producer of sweet potatoes, cotton and pulpwood. Other main industries in Mississippi include advanced manufacturing, utilities, transportation, and health services.[14]

Mississippi is almost entirely within the Gulf coastal plain, and generally consists of lowland plains and low hills. The northwest remainder of the state consists of the Mississippi Delta, a section of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. Mississippi's highest point is Woodall Mountain at 807 feet (246 m) above sea level adjacent to the Cumberland Plateau; the lowest is the Gulf of Mexico. Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate classification.
It's a typical former agrarian state. So what can it produce TODAY, reliably? What do its current workers and children need to learn to do those jobs?

I don't know the answers, but I've also never set foot in MS.

Where would SC be today if they didn't build up Charleston and the beaches, but more importantly build up the I-85 corridor?

Alot of Black people left Mississippi to seek out greener pastures elsewhere. Mississippi also has a history of severe political oppression. Basically, bad government, bed economy = high poverty rates.
This is true for the entire U.S. is it not?

Amazing. Democrats actually believe it is the government's job to come into area with disappearing industries and install fresh industries! Just right out of thin air. "Here I am. No job. So you gotta come bring me a job!"

Y'all is hysterical!
What is a state supposed to do about a small area suffering from loss of businesses? If Democrats want states to "do their job" and install/recruit fresh industries ... then they'll be giving those businesses tax breaks.

And we KNOW what Dems (well, Progressives at least) say about corporations getting tax breaks.

What if Mississippi stuck to their (relatively) high but flat ground and developed the Bienville National Forest of 178,000 acres (about the size of NYC) into a solar farm?

What's amazing is how Republicans think they have no obligations to promote industry and jobs for their state, isn't that the responsibility of state government? Maybe they just to maintain the status quo of the plantation system for another few years....
those strawmen and boogeymen you're grasping at.

Why is the state of Mississippi supposed to pay for Jackson's water system?

A GOP governor, seemingly with a couple of willing underlings, took some portion of a large discretionary welfare fund - it's still wrong - for their "pet project". And yes, from what the impartial (hahahhahahaha) news media tells us, the newer Governor is in the midst of a coverup by firing a prosecutor over this.

You, my fail friend , wandered way off topic. Stomping the crap out of Putin from a proxy position ( for us only, he is stuck first person) is a trillion dollar event and we are winning it for cents on the dollar. What is the matter with you?
