Consider the impact of 1&1/2-ton sedan going 50 MPH vs that of a 4000-ton freight train at 40 MPH; consider which one is easier to stop.

Also consider the difference between a rusted, little used railroad siding with infrequent use, speed restrictions due to lighter maintenance requirements, no "grade crossing protection" (flashing lights. gates, etc), vs a heavily-used main line carrying 20 freights per day, at normal operating speeds.

(In this instance, the only protection appears to be a simple, non-illuminated, non-electrified "crossbuck", not integrated with track circuitry).

Unfortunately, most people, and a suprising number of law-enforcement personnel either cannot tell the difference, or lack the foresight to apply the reasoning cited above in too many cases.

But "Why didn't the train stop?"

Just about all I watch are crime shows and trials when I am not watching football or basketball. It's a true representation of the reality of many people. The system is corrupt. It would not be the first time that a cop used his duty to off someone and it won't be the last. The documented cases are just the ones that got caught. They often don't get caught.

The female cop was already under investigation for domestic violence. The more you dig into these people's history, it just gets worse and worse. When you see those red and blue lights behind you and pullover, these are the type of people you are going to be dealing with. Low intelligence and violent.

Although their departments have not disclosed their names, CBS News Colorado has identified them through sources and other means as Sgt. Pablo Vazquez from the Platteville Police Department and Officer Jordan Steinke with the Fort Lupton Police Department.

CBS News Colorado has not been able to reach Vazquez for comment. Prior to joining the Platteville PD, he was an officer with the Commerce City Police Department, Berthoud Police and the Federal Heights Police Department. He is certified by Colorado's POST board and has no adverse actions listed on his POST certification.

Steinke, with the Fort Lupton police department, appeared the be the first officer to arrive on scene after Vazquez. On police body cam video, she can be seen handcuffing the suspect and escorting the woman to Vazquez's police car.

Steinke, 28, previously served as a deputy with the Washington County Sheriff's Office and Fort Morgan Police. She is also certified by the state's POST board and has no adverse actions on her state record. Her attorney told CBS News Colorado Steinke was unlikely to comment at this stage of the investigation.

Fort Lupton Police Chief John Fryar declined to discuss Steinke's involvement in the case saying it was "a personnel issue." But he said "she has been under some scrutiny" and confirmed she was the subject of an internal affairs investigation because of "physical injury to someone she was involved with." Fryar went on to say, "She has done good work for us since she came to us from Washington County.

I wonder why she had to transfer from Washington County.

This is just another "Police chase gone wrong, a very old topic. Is the public well served by the zealotry of the police to make every arrest? That is the lens through which we ought to be looking.

Every day, there are about five bank robberies in the US. Nobody chases them, half are never caught. No shootouts in malls, which are bad for business, no car chases. The banks eat the loss, which runs about $4,000 per heist.

The nation' CBA rater for felonies is barely 50%, with nearly half getting away scot free. Can we live with that?

What if the police had said "We're onto you, so stop giving drivers the finger, OK?" Couple of back-slaps all around. Would justice be served?

Ok, so since you watch these types of shows and are predisposed to thinking as such, why don't you noodle through this one?

Put yourself in the cops shoes as they prepare this plan.

Especially note that the target has to voluntarily stop close enough to a rail crossing that you can park behind them on the rail crossing and you have to get the timing exactly right for the train to arrive...and have the other cop not see it coming....and get someone to call 911 exactly at the right time and location for your car to respond.

Since this has become a police chase with "zealotry" by changing and leaving out key facts, why didn't the driver just engage her anti-grav and fly off engaging her cloaking device?

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that her living arrangements changed whether the accusation is true or not.

If they had "key facts" that they had cornered Public Eneny #1, why didn't they just shoot her?

The police chief didn't say that she was "already under investigation for domestic violence".

""she has been under some scrutiny" and confirmed she was the subject of an internal affairs investigation because of "physical injury to someone she was involved with.""

Naturally after the train accident she would be "under some scrutiny" and she would be 'subject to an internal affairs investigation' for the "physical injury to someone she was involved with". The person she was "involved with" was Rios-Gonzalez, and her "involvement" was when she'd questioned her and had placed her into that vehicle, which ended up physically injuring Rios-Gonzalez.
