This is Paul Krugman branching out from economics, as he often does.

It's certainly clear that Putin has a big-time ego-image problem, which has much of the world figuring how to let him save face in some way, which some clear similarity to the America right-wing growing appreciation for autocrats.

Putin’s Russia is autocratic, brutal and homophobic, with a personality cult built around its ruler. What’s not to like?
There’s something special about the MAGA embrace of the mystique of Russian might: a worldview that equates tough-guy swagger with effectiveness. This worldview has warped the right’s perception not just of the Russian army but also of how to deal with many other issues.
Success depends more on skill, knowledge and openness to ideas than on muscle power. But the MAGA ethos is all bound up with exaltation of tough talk and denigration of expertise.

That's the left projecting again.

Leftists have always gravitated towards authoritarian sociopaths. What the leftist perceives as strength -- a quality he thoroughly lacks -- is actually cruelty. The leftist just lacks the intelligence and/or perception to see it for what it is. Or perhaps he is awed by cruelty, as so many leftists actually believe political power grows out of the barrel of a gun, as Mao Zedong once said.

In any case, Putin is the darling of the left.

What on earth are you nattering on about?!

In case you've forgotten, much of the Right was in love with Putin for 4 years. You could look up threads from 2016-2020 in this subforum, and see for yourself.

You completely misunderstood the Krugman essay. Oh well. That does tend to happen when you don't read the actual article...

PROJECTING : (Psychology) To externalize and attribute (an emotion or motive, for example) unconsciously to someone or something else in order to avoid anxiety.

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

The formal psychological definition, and the definition in common use, diverged many years ago.

Today, the common definition is consciously attributing beliefs and/or actions to another that you actually hold yourself.

This is an Alinsky political tactic.

Quote:
Saul Alinsky, Rules for Radicals: "Accuse your opponent of what you are doing, to create confusion and to inculcate voters against evidence of your own guilt"
The left does it all the time with regard to racism. They call the right racist, yet support Planned Parenthood, an organization created specifically to kill black babies.

I was looking forward to reading the entire article, even though it was Krugman, but once he couldn't resist throwing out "MAGA" at the beginning he lost me.

Just another tedious, predictable Krugman blathering.

Is MAGA a derogatory word now?

When did that happen?
