Truck driver was just a off season gig for Joe. In his 20s he played center for the Boston Bruins. In his 30s he somehow had enough talent to be point guard for the NY Knicks.

Of course; he worked in the Puerto Rican coal mines , then as a coal truck driver, while moonlighting as a no nonsense life guard, where he saved a beached whale.
