Well lookie here. As it turns out, Kamala Harris was running a slave labor system in California by denying prisoners their rightful release and instead keeping them in jail so they could be used to fight wildfires instead while being paid only $1 an hour to do so.

Kamala Harris was running a modern day slave system in California.

Imagine how the news outlets and social media would react if she was a Republican.

Kamala Harris and her connection to inmate firefighters

"As California attorney general, Kamala Harris led a team that fought to keep more people imprisoned so they could fight wildfires.

Eventually, civil rights advocates urged the court to deliver an ultimatum: One day of work would shorten prison sentences two days.

That’s when Harris’ office raised the alarm: California couldn’t afford to lose the cheap prison labor, it argued."

So what exactly is the criticism or controversy?

The prisoners get paid $1 per day -- and in a prison economy that has more meaning than in the "square" economy. As stated in the article: "The prisoners also get another perk: two days’ credit toward their sentence for every day working at a fire camp."

I'm not sure why we should be worked up about this. They are lower risk inmates trained to fight fires living in camps away from the prison facility. Inmates typically get paid little or nothing. States will sometimes pay inmates a pittance sum, more of an allowance, to avoid having them declared indigent so that the state must provide everything they need. It is a silly balance sheet activity. A dollar a day plus accelerated time served (2 for 1) is not too bad compared to some state prisons.

Less than 1% of Americans owned slaves. However Kamala Harris Great-great grandfather was 2nd largest Slave Holder in Jamaica. Slave ownership is literally in her DNA.

Cute. Nice try but no cigar.

First, the statement that "less than 1% of Americans owned slaves" is not relevant or comparable to slave holders in a plantation-based colonial slave economy in Jamaica. Second, her alleged connection to Hamilton Brown, an Irish planter in Jamaica in the 1820s, has not been proven. But does it even matter? Harris might be descended from a slaveowner but so are most Blacks in the Americas with family roots in slavery. On average, Black Americans have about 20% of their DNA from Europeans. Actually, she is also more likely descended from slaves living in Jamaica.
