Personally, I don't think it does. If you read Ralph Baric's work, his strain [probably our ancestral Wuhan strain] was killing most of the mice too. In humans, almost half were asymptomatic. Scientists are not very smart, they couldn't even create a lethal virus.
As the saying goes, from medicine/drug trials: mice lie, monkeys exaggerate.
If every drug worked as well in mice as it did in humans, we'd have cured cancer by now lol.

You have more faith in scientists. I don't think they could create a lethal virus if they tried. Though, ofc I don't favor my tax dollars going to them trying lol. I did find this paper interesting though, as what it implies about our little virus friend SARS-CoV-2.
It's not 80% more lethal. It's an 80% kill rate. That means it will kill SEVEN BILLION people.
