Car thefts have skyrocketed in St. Louis in recent months, with city leadership threatening lawsuits against Kia and Hyundai for an alleged defect that makes certain makes of the cars easier to steal.

"With this letter, the city demands that Kia and Hyundai mitigate the defective conditions providing thieves – including teenagers as young as 13 – the instrumentalities by which they are destroying property, endangering city drivers and themselves, and, in some cases, committing violent felonies," according to the letter written Aug. 19 by City Counselor Sheena Hamilton.

"Another stolen recovery we got," Hartmann added to KMOV of picking up the remains of a stolen car in the city. "It’s good for business but it’s bad for a lot of things. Customers are out of their car for weeks."
Pretty typical of the mentality of the leadership of "blue" cities. Instead of blaming their own "soft-on-crime", no-bail, defund the police practices of these cities-blame (and sue!) the car manufacturers! Guess what kids-it ain't working! No one is stupid enough to believe your lies and blame the car makers, rather than your policies.

While I get your point about who to blame, the cars definitely have sub standard theft protection. As evidenced by the fact Kia and Hyundai have been giving away steering wheel locks.
Getting tough on crime wont likely affect this issue because when you make cars this easy to steal its not hardened criminals stealing them. Its young kids.

Okay so the car makers in question make it harder for some kid to steal the car so what does that kid do that still wants to joyride? He and his little gang of punks take to car jacking people instead. Would you rather go shopping and come out to find your car gone or would you rather pull up to a stop light and have some young thugs threaten you with weapons, drag you out of the car and punch, kick, club, stab or shoot you because you didn't move fast enough?

The problem is not that the cars are too easy to steal it is that there are punk teens that where never taught right from wrong. When they catch these kids they should all their victims to walk into their bedrooms and take anything they want. Those kids will surely miss their Xbox.

Well, this is another one of those Tic Toc challenges that's not only causing this but in some cases, getting kids killed.

So, instead of suing the car manufacturers, we start suing Tic Toc or just get it banned conpletely. All of these stupid challenges are killing kids or turning them into thieves.

Welcome to the 3rd world. People, as America collapses you will learn that you simply cannot leave cars in public unattended anymore. If they don't steal it, they will scratch it just because they are mean or jealous.

Get a beater and drive it on errands. I have a couple of very nice / expensive cars. They are never parked in lots, only secure valet or where I can watch them from a restaurant or whatever. If I know I must leave them, someone comes along to babysit.

Sad, but it's a fact of modern life.

Um..no. No manufacturer used immobilizers as standard equipment until recently-they used a manual, keyed ignition-as Kia/Hyundai has on the cars in question. Not an issue with the vehicle-an issue with the leadership and their refusal to get a handle on criminals in their jurisdiction. It's like blaming the concrete company that made the sidewalk material for the bums living on the street.
