I mean, Trump was a real estate developer and reality TV star. So why not a football player, a news anchorwoman (Lake) or a talk show host (Oz)? The only qualification for office is 100% fealty to Trump and the willingness to make outrageous claims, even if they are false.

They have a lock on a critical mass of American voters who set a severely low bar for a conservative candidate to jump over. Its used to be Pro- life but now it will be the idea that Donald Trump had the election stolen from him. Exhibit A is Herschel Walker who stands a good chance to win. A candidate who has been proven to have aborted his own children. But he says he is pro-life and that is good enough for then. It doesn't matter what he has done as long as he will vote contrary to what he has done in his own life.
The current GOP doesn't have anything but poor quality candidates. That is what drives their fixation with celebrity or faux celebrity candidates like Herschel Walker, Dr. Oz, Trump, even our cutesy local TV weatherman. They are all clueless but have recognized names in their districts or state. In some cases they have camera presence or a bit of communication sense. But that does not pass for intelligence or experience. They are good at taking direction but don't have much ability or independent thought. They latch on to one aspect of the culture wars or some local or regional issue as a one-trick pony and try to ride it into office.
So they should elect incompetent people into office who were bartenders like AOC, or mentally deficient candidates like Biden and Fetterman? At least the weatherman can understand the words coming out of peoples mouths and speak in complete and coherent sentences.
In 2010, it was Christine O’Donnell, the Senate candidate from Delaware, who confirmed that she was not a witch and lost the election.
In 2012, it was Todd Akin, the Senate candidate from Missouri, who said some unusual things about abortion and lost the election.
In 2023, it’s Herschel Walker.
