They've gone way beyond just looking at his tax returns, which the IRS already had and were being audited.
That 'audit' claim was a non-issue from the start. A person can turn over tax returns even if they are being audited.
They've gone beyond the taxes? Well, Trump did some shady things other than fudge on his taxes. Congress is not looking into other deals -- prosecutors are.

This is my issue with most Congressional investigations in general. There are already entities charged with investigating these matters, and they usually have the evidence in their possession already.
I disagree. Elizabeth Warren laying into some bankers who were laundering money for drug lords really shone a light on corporate greed and malfeasance.
This obsession over President Trump’s tax returns is so silly. Ultimately, this is political, and they just want to embarrass him if his returns indicate that he lied about how wealthy he is.
If my choice in 2024 is between Joe Biden or some random progressive Democrat who wants to keep our country on the horrific path we’re on now (not sure how ANYONE could admit to being a Democrat right now), or President Trump, I’m going to choose President Trump. I don’t care about his tax returns.
Sounds more like unhinged, partisan harassment to me, which is not a legitimate legislative purpose. The IRS is competent. Trump regularly gets audited because of his wealth. If there's anything illegal in his taxes, the IRS will know what to do.
Just heard the announcement (which was supposedly just released) that SCOTUS has refused to take up this case and the House Ways and Means Committee will now get Trump's tax returns.
Supreme Court OKs handover of Trump tax returns to Congress
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Tuesday cleared the way for the imminent handover of former President Donald Trump's tax returns to a congressional committee after a three-year legal fight.
The court, without comment, rejected Trump's plea for an order that would have prevented the Treasury Department from giving six years of tax returns for Trump and some of his businesses to the Democratic-controlled House Ways and Means Committee.
This is really not going to change everything. Is the "big" announcement that Trump overstated his wealth? That he uses the tax-code efficiently? That he's giving not enough to charity? What else can come out of this? Will anyone even care of change their minds at this point?
Tick-Tock...Tick-Tock. Let's see what happens when that changes in a couple of weeks.
I wonder how much pushback there will be when the "Republican-led" house starts to investigate Biden and Hunter's dealings...
The returns will be handed off to the Senate so the investigation can continue seamlessly. Not even a problem.
