The company will inform affected staffers Friday at 9 a.m. San Francisco time, according to the memo. Amid the layoffs, Twitter plans to temporarily close offices and suspend badge access “to help ensure the safety of each employee as well as Twitter systems and customer data,” the memo said.
All told, Musk wants to cut about 3,700 jobs at San Francisco-based Twitter, people with knowledge of the matter said this week. The entrepreneur had begun dropping hints about his staffing priorities before the deal closed, saying he wants to focus on the core product. “Software engineering, server operations & design will rule the roost,” he tweeted in early October.
According to Fortune, Musk wants to let go about half of the workforce.
The bolded part makes me think Musk wants to run Twitter like his other companies, free of as much fluff as possible.
I saw another post of Musk's where he said there were ten managers for every coder at Twitter. No doubt an exaggeration, but I'd hate to be a non-coding/designing software engineering manager there right now.

A former colleague of mine, "ex-Twitter" in LinkedIn parlance, once described many of the managers at Twitter as "no-ops".
It's a pain being unemployed, but sometimes losing a job can be the best thing that ever happened to you. Spending all day checking the twitter spew sounds like something best left far behind.
It's really funny to see the left get in such a twist over this. I have yet to see a single quote from Musk that said he was going to remove all moderation, and that he would allow hate speech to flourish. Of course, I understand that to many liberals allowing Conservatives and their viewpoints to be spoken is automatically hate speech so I can see the confusion.
But I am wondering what the big issue is. Back in the Spring when he announced the purchase there were many postings from Twitter employees who stated they would quit if he took over. Seems like that would be a great place for him to start to hold these people to their statements.
What sort of actions he is afraid of to close the offices and remove the badge access? Does he think that some of these (ex) Employees will try and retaliate? Perhaps the ones that are more left-leaning?
What if most of the remaining employees quit? I cannot imagine wanting to work for a company under someone that continues to flip-flop on so many big issues, alternating between wanting to acquire and not, demanding 80 hour weeks one moment and then 0 hour weeks the next. You can’t possibly plan anything in that type of environment.
