Amit Paley, the CEO of the LGBTQ+ youth mental health organization the Trevor Project, has been ousted following internal concerns over his leadership abilities.
Paley’s removal was officially announced via an email sent to staff last Friday, according to the Advocate. The decision was made after staffers expressed concerns over the company’s recent growth, and Paley’s ability to manage that growth in a way that was equitable to employees. According to Teen Vogue, over 200 employees signed a letter expressing this dissatisfaction prior to Paley’s removal. In the interim, Paley will be replaced by Trevor Project cofounder Peggy Rajski, according to a statement provided to Teen Vogue.
“The Trevor Project is currently facing a period of transition, rethinking how to sustainably grow our 24/7 crisis services to respond to the public health crisis of LGBTQ youth suicide and address the mental health disparities impacting these youth,” the organization said in a statement to Teen Vogue. The statement also noted that just five years ago, the Trevor Project’s crisis hotline averaged “less than 200 inbound crisis contacts per day,” a number that has increased tenfold in 2022 with an average of over 2,000 crisis contacts per day.
