"Only the police should have guns, because they're the people who have training and can be trusted to be responsible with them."
This is the general response from the gun control crowd when challenged about why police should be exempt from whatever gun law is at issue. (Police are exempt almost universally from gun control).
The position seems like common sense, but "common sense" is nothing but shared beliefs. There's nothing magical or unique which differentiates a police officer from any other human being. They're imperfect people, just like you and me, and they can be corrupted and make mistakes, just like you and me. Training can help, but it can't eliminate that reality.
People who don't get paid to carry guns can complete training, too, yet we never see exemptions for private citizens who've undergone that process - just police. When it comes to guns, police officers are a special class of citizen and get to enjoy their rights while the rest of us suffer the tyranny.
Here's one of those highly trained police officers demonstrating the responsibility which has earned them the near full enjoyment of their rights, while the rest of us have to worry about whether or not we just became felons overnight because some new law was passed.
This isn't an anti-police post, by the way. Reading it over, it kind of has that tone. It's quite the opposite, actually. My beef is with the people who define the rules. Police officers are mere mortals is my point, and if they can be trusted with X weapon or feature, then so can you or I.
Many places with bans on guns do not allow the police to have guns either. This is what most people who want guns banned are shooting for. Pardon the pun.

I was thinking the other day about that. It seems like should you get a shooter in Walmart, at some point in the future their will be counter measures. Like if gunfire is detected a pulse or stun wave of some sort is set off. Incapacitating everybody inside but not lethal.
