The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has officially changed its mission statement, dropping a quote from former President Lincoln because it used male pronouns and was viewed by some as excluding women.
On Thursday, the VA announced that its new motto is, "To fulfill President Lincoln's promise to care for those who have served in our nation’s military and for their families, caregivers, and survivors."
Well the new phrase does better reflect that nature of the VA and the makeup of our military in 2023.
At least they didn't totally erase Lincoln and History from it but that will no doubt be coming someday soon when a couple of people complain... I'm rather appalled that they did not mention Gay and Trans people in their new mission statement.
What was the quote? I'm not following the link. Is this click bait? Seems odd to leave the quote out.
Here is the old motto...
Quote:
“To fulfill President Lincoln’s promise ‘to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan’ by serving and honoring the men and women who are America’s veterans.”
Here is the new one...
Quote:
"To fulfill President Lincoln's promise to care for those who have served in our nation’s military and for their families, caregivers, and survivors."
I don't have a problem with the new motto. It's more inclusive of the reality of men and women fighting wars today and actually seems to cover more of what the VA does/it's impact. I didn't have a problem with the old motto either, but the new one is fine by me as well.
