It may be the "consensus", but the fact remains that Real Live People pay that money with every paycheck.
We haven't HAD a Budget since 2008 - we have Continuing Resolutions that tack on Percentages to previous Budgets.
A real good start would be to PASS a Real Budget.
Another good start would be to Sunset all Agencies and Programs UNLESS they can PROVE they are working ...... that's exactly what Texas does. Every 10 years, every Agency & Program has to PROVE to the Legislature that they Deserve to continue and be Funded.
A good start would be to force the federal government to cease operating unless and until it passes one.
No budget, no checks. End of Story.

God forbid nonprofits have to go out and earn their funding on the open market like everyone else.
Under that scenario, they all go under because very few nonprofits operate on charitable dollars only, and nonprofits already are scrambling for what little charitable dollars are available. Then what? No child care, no substance abuse treatment, no homeless shelters, reduced funding for public schools (that means your local property and income taxes go up!), no GED classes, no mental health treatment, no low-cost health care, no services to veterans, and the list goes on. State and local governments also receive federal dollars. All those services would dry up as well.
Is that the society we want to live in?

The benefits of a society with a tiny federal government far outweigh the costs. Maybe if people knew the true full cost of these programs, people would start telling the government to stop wasting so much of their money.

I don’t know what that last phrase is supposed to mean. I’m 64 years old, been working since I was 12, supporting a family since I was 25, so yeah, I lived through Reagan and Bush as an adult.
You made a statement that fed revenues go up dramatically under Republican Presidents. What that has to do with the price of tea in China I don’t know. But the data that I viewed shows revenue going up more or less the same for Democrats and Republicans. Here is my source (unfortunately, the US Treasury public website would only give me data back to 2004):
One thing you will notice is that after the Bush tax cuts, revenues were down for the next four years. That coincides with a period when we went from a reported budget surplus back to a deficit. Bush fought a major war by putting it on the credit card.
Also notice that after the Trump tax cuts revenues remained essentially flat for three years while spending continued to increase.
Cut off the Billions that go to Foreign aide and that includes the Ukraine.
Shut down the Border and Deport all the Illegal Aliens that are costing us approx 1.5 Billion per year to keep them happy.
Make America and her citizens and Legal Immigrants the #1 priority and instead of giving the needy a handout make it possible to give them a hand up. Allow people to look after themselves instead of the Government doing it.
Just stop the nonsense spending designed to boost equity and equality and use that money to actually do something we can all use like repairing infrastructure.
Without at least basic guidelines from a federal education dept., I fear that public schools in Mississippi would teach kids all kinds of misinformation, and would fail to teach them about evolution and whatever else conflicts with their theocracy.
That would be my immediate main concern and hesitancy about eliminating it, but otherwise I'd at least be open to hearing the argument. There is definitely a lot of bloat in DC.
Yet, the federal department of education currently in place has done nothing to stop liberal extremist misinformation being forced on children in an increasing number of schools. Therefore, said agency has proven conclusively that they don't function as credible gatekeepers of what is and isn't taught in schools. Newsflash: Your ideology isn't the only right ideology.
