Why pay for your own defense when you can get America to do it for you?
If you look at who has contributed to Ukraine - as a percentage of national GDP, which is admittedly an imperfect yardstick, but probably the best at hand - you'll find the Baltic states and Poland way out in front of anyone else. https://www.statista.com/chart/27331...o-ukraine-aid/
And Finland is not a slouch on defense, never were.
It does, because presently, Russia has no viable path to a better future for itself and it's people. It has burned it's bridges with the west, and the east is just exploiting it and it's commodities, skimming a little off the top as they move Russian oil, and that's it. There is no common bond between Russia and it's axis of misfit nations. None of them trust each other enough work together to build a better future cooperatively. But the west can cooperatively work together and build a brighter future, and we can also work together collectively to kick ass, if push ever comes to shove.
At the present time, the Russian heart and soul is not in this fight, because most of them understand Russia was never at risk of being attacked by the west. Most of them are probably not stupid enough to believe Russia has acted in self defense. This, on top of everything else, is why they are guaranteed to lose. It's the same ol problem Russia has almost always had... Poor leadership making bad decisions for which the people themselves will ultimately pay for. And I do think it is unfortunate for the people of Russia, because most did not sign up for this. But, this is why leadership has to be taken seriously. If your nation is represented by the wrong people, bad things can and sometimes do happen. Putin is a relic of the USSR's past, and belongs in the past. I think that much is clear to everyone, including the vast majority of the Russian people.
“Finland has become the 31st member of the Nato security alliance, doubling the length of member states' borders with Russia.”
A great day for peace.
I worry for Finland. They are so few. Only around 5.5 million people total, yet such a huge boarder. They already have had 1/2 their country taken by Russia in years past. Hope they will be okay.
Interesting how Russia waited for Trump to leave his presidency and BOOM all hell broke loose over there. We are getting closer and closer to an all out war. No one will win that.

Enjoy the days you have.
Finland lost only 9% of its territory to Russia in the Winter War.
Finland will be fine. They lost the Winter War because they were alone. They are not anymore.
The coward Putin won't pick on Finland now. He picked on Ukraine because Ukraine wasn't a NATO member while claiming he invaded because Ukraine wanted to be a NATO member.
But he didn't dare invading any of the nearby NATO countries.

The thing with that argument is that Russia ain't running out of oil and other natural resources anytime soon. Russia has certainly alienated itself with many of the west, but, sad to say, the west if not the future. And we're seeing how much many countries still rely on that Russian oil, with Japan now ignoring the capped price imposed by western nations on Russian oil.

To be sure, Russia has massive reserves of many natural resources. But the same can be said about Venezuela having a lot of oil in the ground. How has that been working out for them lately? Extracting crude oil is, well, a rather crude foundation for the future, especially since the west is moving away from crude oil, a trend that will likely accelerate going forward.
Ask yourself, who is more in command of the future, the USA or Russia? Keep in mind the USA has vast reserves of natural resources as well just waiting to be tapped into if the need truly ever presented itself.
And Russia is receiving cheap tires from China that explode and kill people when they attempt to inflate them. It's clear who is, and who is not winning this conflict.
Putin just keeps digging a bigger hole and creating a bleaker future for Russia. Eventually, China and India will abandon Russia and the future will pass them on by, rendering the nation insignificant and impotent on the geopolitical stage, kind of like Iran or North Korea. Once Putler finishes burning through his WW2 era trophy pieces/military equipment, it is game over.
