I've been a conservative Republican all my life, primarily because I don't think it is fair to pass debt on to future generations just so we can provide ourselves with goodies.
But now that I am middle-aged and childless, I'm thinking "screw it, I'll become a selfish Democrat and take all I can from the government, ie. future generations."
Besides, most young people are voting Democrat, so they must not mind that us older people are crippling them with future debt.

No, because leftists end up authoritarians in time. Their philosophy ultimately backfires on them and ends up destroying the values they claimed to hold so dear. The intellectual left are always composed of marxists, socialist utopians, and various social engineering types who believe the people are too stupid to make their own choices, that the state should make the choices for them.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and leftists more than anyone believe they have good intentions. We face a very real threat of the rise of authoritarianism this century with Xi attempting to expand his influence outside China and the western ruling class having totally inept policies that are going to destroy the west... unchecked unvetted immigration, inept monetary policy where they bail out everything and everyone while printing to oblivion, and their "soft on crime" attitude where they don't believe in bail and jail sentences for non violent crimes. These 3 things combined are a dangerous combination for the stability of a society.
The future is looking dystopian. Western leftists want to disarm us, while their (supposed) opposition is expanding their influence among authoritarian nations on a global scale. They fight for "democracy" but I'm convinced they don't really know what the term means, given they want unchecked power. They are fighting for this utopian ideal that they have in their heads that will never actually pan out the way they expect. Human nature will prevent it.

If I become demented as I get older, then democrat policy may make more sense to me. I'll join you then. Or when I die, as most dead people vote democrat.
Yup. I could never vote blue after what I witnessed for the past 15 years. Democrats made it clear they hate America and want to turn this into Europe... A place ancestors like mine fled. Democrats want to make it so no matter where you go, you will be living a socialist nightmare. That's what they mean by "liberal world order". Except democrats aren't liberals. The founding fathers of the USA were true liberals. They believed that freedom was one of the most important things a person can have. Today's "liberals" are just impostures who want to control people, control the economy, control what we can and cannot say, etc. They are actually quite illiberal.

Because Northern European countries consistently outrank the US in terms of quality of life measures. Healthcare. Life expectancy. Education. Crime. Economic freedom. Political freedom. Happiness.
Why wouldn’t you want us to emulate the successful European societies, in areas where it makes sense? Maybe it’s you who hates America?

It was Ronald Reagan who put us on this course of deficit and debt. The idea that Republicans are fiscally conservative is laughable. Especially after Reagan, the Bushes, Nixon, and Trump.

Those "societies" you mention are far less diverse than those in America. You cannot compare a homogenous country/countries consisting of 5-20 million people to the USA. But you know this already.
