I think the vast majority of Americans agree that the treatment of Native Americans is a blot on our history and that many shameful, even genocidal acts were perpetrated on them. Removing the term “Columbus Day” isn’t going to do anything to change this or improve the lives of current Native Americans. I’m not a big fan of performative acts, that make activists feel good but don’t actually accomplish anything. I’m also generally not a big supporter of massive government programs, but I do think the federal government should fund programs to help Native American reservations with housing, health, education, employment opportunities, and support for Native American culture and languages. While some tribes have become economically secure through casinos, many reservations have extreme poverty, deplorable housing, and horrendous health issues.
The so-called Native Americans were not native to this country/continent. They migrated here just as the Europeans did. The former committed many atrocities against each other and their different tribes. They were no angels either.
Uh, yes. Horrible personality or not, Christopher Columbus was pivotal in the modern discovery of the Americas by Europe, which ultimately lead to the foundation of the United States. Leif Erikson had nothing to do with it as the purported Icelandic colony they founded was up in Newfoundland over 1000 years ago and ultimately was lost.
Here is another Hint at who is pushing this cancellation of History........ Actually I think we all know what party or affiliation is behind it.
Here is an idea for those self loathing, white guilt, white shame sorts that actually do think America was stolen from the Indians and that Slaves built everything. Instead of shaming every White person why not lead by example?
Every white Lefty that is ashamed of something they had no direct hand in doing should sell everything they own and hand the money to the closest Black family while apologizing profusely. They should then hand over the deed to their house and the land it sits on to the nearest Native American Tribe.
Put your money where your misery is Lefties.
When you are penniless and have no where to live you could then renounce your citizenship from this terrible and racist country, go to Mexico then walk back across the Border and Biden will take care of you.
If you did all of this could you finally stop suffering from your white guilt and leave the rest of us alone?
Again with this weird fake binary choice between:
"Be delusional about actual history and if anything is mentioned about your ancestors doing bad stuff, shut your eyes and ears and yell LALALALALA you want me to feel icky and I don't wanna! My team is good cowboys in white hats who never did anything wrong ever!"
...oorrr...
"Hear the truth but wallow in guilt and shame and feelings about it all the time."
I don't know what kind of a world you live in, seriously, where those are the only options.
The most abusive d-bags I've ever known still did some good things in their lives. But I don't go out of my way to throw parties on their birthdays. We don't have to deny the role that Columbus played in historical events to also be able to admit he went about it all one heck of a terrible way, and none of it requires we hero-worship the guy with statues and holidays. It's weird.
Besides which, to quote a thing I just saw on Facebook, "How do you even observe Columbus Day? Do you go to the grocery store and get lost looking for spices?"
Leftishists seek to destroy all traditions and institutions that oppose their "benevolent" despotism and tyranny.
They believe the world is divided into oppressed and the oppressors, regardless of facts.
Ironically, when they "defeat" the oppressors, they institute a more repressive regime than what preceded it.

I am a leftist. When have I ever advocated doing that?
For as long as I have been alive, Columbus Day has also been celebrated as Italian/American Day in his honor as an Italian from Genoa.
Back when I was in HS and my school marched in the Columbus Day Parade, there were also Benevolent Societies marching carrying the Italian flag. People along the parade route were carrying and waving Italian flags. I know Rudy has marched in the parade, not only as Mayor, but an Italian American as well. He has SAID SO.
If Indigenous People are to be celebrated in addition on this day, why not as well.
