Why not cut to the chase and nominate Trump? All 217 or whatever are afraid to cross him.
He would have no path. There are two Republicans in the House currently who voted to impeach him so that is a no, and several from swing and even Dem leaning districts that Trump would be a non-starter
Hopefully the next speaker is not one of the GOP's many extremists. I however do not hold out much hope since there are few reasonable people left in their caucus. It is mostly a bunch of attention seeking crazy nuts these days. Few of them have any real desire to actually govern.
After several rounds of voting Rep Tom Emmer received a majority of the GOP House conference vote (the lowest candidate got eliminated each round)
The GOP then held a vote to see if Emmer would have enough support within the conference before bringing it to a full House vote. 26 Republicans opposed Emmer's nomination and indicated they would not vote for him on the floor.
Emmer met with those opposed to him in hopes of changing their minds.
Trump trashed Emmer on Truth Social
GOP held another conference in which it those opposed to Emmer didn't change their minds. Emmer just left the Conference and is dropping out

Is there even ANYONE among the Republicans in Congress who might be trusted with the gavel at this point? Isn’t there a point at which they realize that a warm body who can move things along is what they really need?

UPDATE: Republicans have just changed their Conference rules so they can hold an expedited and abbreviated candidate forum tonight (Tuesday).
Those who want to throw their hat into the ring for the Speakership in this next round have until 5:30 p.m. EST to declare their candidacy. The Candidate forum will begin at 6 p.m. EST with Conference voting this evening as well.
Apparently, when Emmer said he was dropping out, someone immediate motioned to move to elect Rep. Mike Johnson and Kevin McCarthy shouted, “This isn’t how we elect a speaker!” which led to the vote to amend the written rules.
It's always fun when you get to the point where you just start tossing your own rules out the window.
At this point, they might as well let every Republican in the House get a floor vote to become the next Speaker of the House and if none can get to 217, then just give it to Jeffries or Pelosi!
